New place with no windows....help!

Getting ready to move in to my uncles old place. He's moving out and offered it to us (free!!!) only dilemma is... There are no windows... Which means no natural light which I crave.
What colors would be good to paint with that work well without natural light? What lighting should I use? I'm lost!
Any help is appreciated!!!

This is not even habitable you have to have some windows even if they are small for ventilation what kind of place is this.?
Well thanks for your concern but it is definitely habitable...lol. Maybe I should be more specific. The bedroom and basement do not have windows that look outside. I am needing tips as far as color scheme and lighting.

A photo of the rooms would be helpful. Are you sharing this home and simply been awarded the one room without windows as your bedroom?

It's kind of hard to explain. I guess I would describe it as a part shed/part living space?
Not my first choice but as a broke college student, anything that is free helps.
Unfortunately I do not have pictures at this time. Just needing to know what colors work with dim light.

Light colours -- like white. You might want to consider this mural:

The lack of an egress opening in your living space should be a definite concern, but if this is truly your only option, a light color with cool undertones and lots of mirrors, some with lamps in front of them for reflection, will help brighten the space.

I would invest my money into finding someone who already has housing and needs a roommate or a dorm room instead of spending money to decorate a shed that has no windows and presumably no bathroom or kitchen facilities. Sounds worse than living in a tent! You're smart enough to go to college, you should be smart enough to find adequate housing and obtain financial assistance or a student loan. Just my 2 cents worth.

Thank you Judy. I really appreciate the advice without the judgement unlike more than half of the people commenting on my post.
Yes, this place has a bathroom. And a kitchen. And would you believe it... A basement and guest room!!!!!!! It's not just a shed. I didn't think I would have to describe my whole living arrangement to get advice for paint colors with no natural light.
Yikes. This really taught me a lesson on asking help from strangers.

Great advice JudyG! BTW...when choosing paint, the back of the swatch will have a LRV (Light Reflective Value). The higher the number, the more light will reflect off it. So, if you're deciding which one between a few colors, I'd pick the highest LRV. Putting layered lighting will help a lot too. Floor canned lights shining up in dark corners ($10 at Lowes), lighting for above art and standard table and floor lamps will create layered lighting and feel bright, yet cozy.

Well Emily, I'm glad to see that your circumstances aren't as dismal as you first described.

A picture paints a thousand words, but when one isn't available, you really need to step up and paint that picture with your own words. Then people will be more willing to help you out.

Hopefully your uncle will jump in and help you with some of the costs of the upgrades that will make for a good home base for you and relaxing place to study. Don't forget to spend some quality time with your uncle. Sounds like you'll owe him a debt that can easily be paid in time and connection with him.

You know, I really haven't appreciated your comments. I just don't understand what makes you feel like you have to be rude and judgemental.
While I may not have described my living situation as well as I could have, it definitely did not warrant a response such as yours.
You don't know me or my situation.
I honestly feel bad for you and wish you well. It's sad to see someone trying to bring a complete stranger such as myself to the miserable level you find yourself in.
Oh well, I guess, as they say... Misery loves company.
Good luck and here's some advice..... You should really take other people's feelings/emotions/thoughts in mind when you decide to put in your "two cents".
    Good luck to you.

Cool on free. Layered lighting includes uplights and when you have more money, install soffits w lights. They make it look like daylight because the light comes off reflected surfaces.

Nice to know! Thank you!! :)

Emily, I actually felt bad for you and your situation. It actually sounded like you were planning on living in a shed in the back yard of someone's house. I apologize if you were so offended, not my intent. I thought a little tough love might help you avert a bad situation.

Welcome to being an adult. Communication is key on sites like this and no two people interpret the written word the same. Sometimes there are gross misinterpretations.

One day, I suspect, you'll look back at this day and laugh about it and tell stories of how horrible you thought I was. I know you won't forget it, that's for sure. You've now made it very clear that I hurt your feelings. Use this experience as inspiration to draw from when you write a good paper for one of your college classes. eh?

I'm just glad to know you're actually living inside a home with a family member and not in a shed of some stranger that your uncle knew.

Try to focus on the future and your education and let the words from others roll off your back. You'll probably run into it frequently.

Again, I apologize if my words made you miserable.

Relax, Emily, I would imagine it's not so much judgement as concern, that was certainly the feeling behind my mention of no egress. I did go on to give advice and provide a picture. Your description of a dimly lit shed with no windows is enough to illicit concern in anyone, especially those of us who have daughters who have graduated college and like you, didn't have much money. Take some advice and thicken your skin before venturing out into the real world, you'll need it.

A ''habitable'' room is a legal building code definition.7' ceiling minimum, etc. Bedrooms have additional code requirements that include windows for light, ventilation, and emergency escape. The point that was being made is this is an extremely unsafe building to occupy if it does not have windows. That IS a basic building requirement. The building is not legally habitable as a residence without those requirements being met. Please have xtra smoke dectors, and plan on an escape route. Your life could be at stake.

Emily, this sounds like a great opportunity for you! Don't pay attention to the 1%'ers, most people in the world are hungry and live in poverty, and would envy your new temporary housing situation.
    I respect your values.

Thank you so much, mermaide. It's tough out there. Just trying to make the best of a not so great situation. I don't have much, but am very grateful for it.
    I really appreciate your comment!

As I see it there is no reason to be blount or unkind when giving design advice. The "know-it-all" posters are the rudest but the best designers are the ones that listen to your concerns and give advice in a constructive way and there are many that unselfishly give there time and expertise on this site. You are the WISE one here, good luck to you.

There's a good thread under "OTHER" about How Houzzers Feel that I would recommend reading when you have time. Your thread is a good example of what is being discussed.

This was not meant to be a chit chat thread.
I believe you were the one who started this nonsense by giving your "two cents".
Just let it go and please stop posting here.
I've dropped it and completely forgotten about it until you posted again. You should too.
I'm looking for advice on decorating my living space, not a fight. So please stop.

The chat thread discussion details hurt feelings and misunderstood words, which is what occurred here.
