Irregular room shape dilemma!!

We are getting rid of the furniture in the bedroom and starting from scratch. Currently we have a queen bed and we want to upgrade to a King bed. THe entire issue about that is that our window is off center because are room actually used to be 2 rooms which we merged to make an awesome closet. We are afraid of having the king bed centered to the wall and the window making it look weird because it is off center. Our tv is wall mounted in a corner with nothing under it. The computer desk is also being removed so its pretty much a blank canvas. The two doors on opposite walls are our bathroom and closet doors.

We are willing to make any type of changes...Remember, its a blank canvas

    Its not the best drawing...

    Hi Jason,
I think you may be worrying too much about achieving symmetry with the window. You don't have another wall for the bed because of the various doors, but I really don't think that having a king size bed under that window is a problem. But if you are really concerned about it, you can use drapes that extend beyond the window, framing the king size bed and covering part wall, part window, to center it over your bed.
Here's an ideabook on placing beds in front of windows (though it doesn't address your specific issue):

I've also included a photo of a room with a bed in front of a window that isn't centered:

HI - Jason --- I think you should cover that whole wall with drapes wall to wall and top to bottom - then your king bed can go on that wall - never mind the placement of the window. Then do the same on the french door wall. If you mount the TV on a swivel arm on the left wall and have a small cabinet under for the TV stuff. Then have matching 3 drawer dressers on each side of the door on the dresser wall w/ mirrors above . Then where the desk is now you could have a small desk /dressing table w/chair . Float a comfy chair on the left of french doors if you have room beside the TV cabinet.

Thank you for the great suggestions. I would have never thought of doing that. Does anyone know where I could go about getting drapes that are custom to my wall?

    more ideas welcome..

Given the ultra modern 'bones' of the bedroom, I would add some textures and fabrics to soften the room up and perhaps a built-in wall unit at the wall where you have the Wall Hung TV would be my suggestion.

If only that window weren't there I would have loved to add a wallpaper or something like the pictures below..

I feel like the drapes might take some of the modern type feel away

You can choose some striking drapes in a modern, geometrical design--maybe black and white or gray and white? Basically, whatever design you would have chosen for wallpaper you can do something similar with the drapes.

Just weighing in that eliminating a window isn't insanely costly, it may be less than drapery in the end. It appears that you don't use the light, as you have the shade closed in the photo and the french doors are probably plenty.

Get a bid for getting rid of the window!

feeny --- Where can I go about finding something like that...I wouldn't even know where to start lol I like that example you gave a lot!

Shannon -- Removing the window or even just having it covered up isn't really a problem. I have a couple handy guys in the family that can help with that. I have seen some really cool textured walls behind beds on houzz which looks awesome

Shannon makes a great point. A wall of draperies can be expensive and will perhaps not give Jason the modern look he wants. He's fortunate also to have the French doors opposite the bed wall.

You could replace it with a very high modern celestory window if you need the light--

HI - Jason -- There are lots of places to get drapes , modern ones too. You can go custon ,but you can also find lots of ready-mades now - on-line too. For the modern look you have the drape,s hang from a ceiling track (hospital track ),and the tops of the drapes would just have a curvy fold to them . For this you would have to go custom. If you do ready-mades then you can have crommet tops ( holes in the top ) that hang on a pipe type rod and they will have a soft fold to them .Both of these will have a modern look. And there is nothing stopping you from having wallpaper - just put it on all the walls that show.( agree with feeny)Along with the drapes , this will be a fantastic bedroom.

Ok so far is everyone with this:

-Dresser on each side of the bathroom sliding door
-Vanity table or maybe some type of chair and table in place of computer desk
-Tv Wall with a small table under the left wall or have a wall unit made (only problem with this is having it match my new furniture)

*The wall to the right of the closet door is looking a little plain too

My wife says the zig zag pattern might make the room look too kiddish

Shannon - I love the celestory window but it looks like little too much work. Lets get some ideas going for the covered window route.

When you include a houzz link- it provides a thumbnail.
if it's an off-site link, it does not.

ok so this is what I have on order. What do you guys think? (pictures bellow houzz idea book)

2x - 3 Drawer dressers for each side of the bathroom sliding door
    2x - night stands

I think we are going with the curtain across the back wall behind the bed. Can you guys give me some ideas on what color curtains will look good and what color or wallpapar can be done to the other walls??!!

Will something like this work? Not sure how I can put that together though

Could you use something like the Ikea Kvartal curtain panel system along the window wall behind the bed to give a nice clean-lined look that would help blur the lines of the window placement? The system can be hun from the wall or ceiling. Example with panels being used to hide a Murphy Bed in a frame: http://www.flickr.com/photos/chailey/4124227587/ Kvartal system page on Ikea site: http://www.ikea.com/us/en/search/?query=KVARTAL
  • 14 years ago
so your saying to go across the window wall with those panels? That looks like a 3 track system
  • 14 years ago
I'm not sure if it - or maybe another system - would have tracks that could be extended so that you could layer the panels or open them enough to expose the window when desired?

ok guys here is update with our new furniture.

At this point we are still wanting to do the curtain to cover the back wall of the bed completely using a track system. We have yet to find a curtain that we like, if anyone has any suggestions that would be great. We are at a loss for what to do ontop of the 2 dressers. My wife wants to put two matching mirrors which is one idea. If it were up to my wife she would completely recreate this room:

    https://www.houzz.com/discussions/upholstered-panels-dsvw-vd~119339

She is absolutely in love with the entire concept of the room. I on the other hand am not sure if i want an ALL grey room. THis room was also the inspiration for our bedding now. We would like to add a bolster pillow but have not found one yet that we like. We are also looking for some new lamps similar to these:

    http://www.houzz.com/ideabooks/2196785/start=52/thumbs/bedroom

If anyone has any suggestions on similar lamps, bolster pillows or mirrors this would be great. We are also at a major loss on what color to paint the walls.

we are open to any other ideas!
