Interior Photography

As an interior photographer I see some fanatstic images on houzz, as one would expect. I have also read the comments & advice by the photographers. Especially the ones about techniques & lighting in particular. But there are 1 or 2 anomolies. Such as do you ever put light (other than natural) through windows & doors to enhance the interior light?. Is it preferable to have the "house" lights on or off? Esposure times when including TV on (having read one comment saying use exposure times of 1 - 20 seconds) & should fires be lit or created in PS?
Is it different for photography in the US compared to UK & Europe?
