That sounds like a good plan, Lucille. I know I often wish all my garden beds were in one spot and that I could save all the time spent going from one to another to weed, water, feed, harvest, etc. Invariably one or two gardens end up getting neglected because of their inconvenient location.

But I say that as I am in the process of expanding several areas - the ones that have been especially productive. Sometimes I think I am my own worst enemy. On those 98 degree days of summer, I KNOW I am. ;)

Using the Permaculture concept, you could arrange your planting areas in rough zones: the closest to the house are the ones that need the most care or that you would visit the most: herbs, salad garden, etc. Further out would be the ones that take less care, less water.

Of course, existing hardscaping can get in the way, so you may have to blow them up.

Lucille, I find that the garden exists in my mind the same exact way as I last saw it. If I haven't seen it in 3 days, no change at all is supposed to have taken place.

My gardens are at a distance from my home. I have to overcome this mental picture and get myself (and my digits ;o) out there to take a look! Otherwise, what needs to be done stays undone. When I finally show up, probably with a simple-minded goofy expression on my face, I'm startled to see the changes. But, a garden is alive!

Growing nice gardens takes some attention and keeping them at-hand has to be a good idea.
