Seed starting temps

Found an interesting chart in a seed-saving book that could be handy this time of year. These are optimal germination tempratures for various crops:

65 -70 F

brassicas, celery, collards, cress, escarole, kale, leek, lettuce, mustard, onion, parsnip, peas, potato, rhubarb, salsify, spinach, shallot

75 - 80F

asparagus, carrot, beans, endive, parsley, Swiss chard

85 - 90F

Beet, eggplant, lima beans, muskmelon, okra, pepper, pumpkin, radish, rutabaga, tomato, turnip

95F

corn, cucumber, squash, watermelon

another interesting list is of seeds that benefit from being exposed to light to encourage germination:

celery root, Chinese cabbage, garden cress, lettuce, mustard, and witloof chicory

finally, celery requires that temperatures fluctuate below 60F nightly

this may come in handy if things seem to be progressing more slowly than you expect.

Happy planting!
