Rain resistant containers

Yes you read the post correct. I keep all my pots of peppers, tomatoes, etc. uncovered to get maximum sun. Problem is, they always seem to get maximum rain exposure when Im not home to move them onto the patio.

Aside from shade cloth hung above, is there something I can put on top of the soil to repel rain, while still allowing aeration? Lately the rain is so severe that it flushes all loose soil, as well as nutrients. I almost lost several productive plants.
