Cabbage question

My first time growing cabbage, and I've noticed that 2 of my plants seem to have started forming multiple heads... or rather, it looks like there are 2-3 plants growing right beside each other. I bought seedlings and moved them outside this spring and I am sure that there wasn't 3 seedlings in one section, so what gives? I'm not particularly worried about the cause as much as; What should I do? Surely if they are separate plants (I think they are, but they are SO close to one-another) they wont do well beings so close to one anther. Can I separate them and re-plant the 'extras' elsewhere? Or should I just cut them off and not disturb any of the roots. My cabbage has not started truly heading yet, but the leaves in the center are starting to look that way, and it all laid down today. Went outside and all the leaves are flat against the ground (except the multi-plant ones)

Any advice? If I can move the extra plants, what is the root system like?
