Corn....mininum spacing?

Just wondering how close I can get away with? Would 6" be too close?

Thanks,

Vera

I planted 2 corn per square foot. They are tasseling and silking right now...with no issues. I also interplanted bush dry beans between the corn.

Here is a link that might be useful: How my corn grows!

Several previous discussions on this question that a search will pull up for you. Recommendations run from 6" to 10" apart with 12" apart rows or more. Commercial plantings tend toward 6" but the home garden usually works better with 8" IMO.

Unless you have very poor ground, 3 to 4 inches will work just fine.

    Thanks all :)

    Dutchess_9,

Love the blog....some really great pictures there!!
Can I ask how are the beans doing beneath the canopy of corn? Do they receive much light? I do know pole beans are often grown with corn, but haven't heard anyone inter-planting with bush beans. I plan to put out Bush Beans 'Blue Lake' and I'd love to inter-plant amongst the corn to save space!

    Hi Vera!
I've been bouncing between here, WS, and the Square-Foot gardening forum trying to have a better, more inviting veggie patch this year. I, too, am looking for the spacing requirements for corn.

Over at SFG, the recommended spacing is 1 per square foot, and a minimum of 4' x 4', however, it seems that some people go as close as 4 per square foot, which shocks me. But they say it works...?!

    Here's a link, and here's another one.

While I'm not all gung-ho SFG, I am "blocking out" my garden this year with dug paths (effectively creating 'raised' beds, and trying out different spacing & companion planting. For the corn, I think I'm going to push the envelope just a hair, and plant them about 8" apart, and in blocks instead of rows.
I still can't get out of the habit of "traditional long rows," and my little block plantings are still arranged in 'short rows,' but I can already see a difference in how 'inviting' my veggie patch is this year.

Anyway, hope that's of some use to you.
I've gotta get started on WSing the rest of my veggie patch.

The original spacing was 1/sqft. The new spacing is 4/sqft, but generally that is for a smaller variety of corn. The taller varieties are going to need more space.

Thanks eaglesgarden! Wow 4/sqft!! I think with this taller variety I'll go with 2/sqft., If I decide to do Strawberry popcorn again this year I'll go 4/sqft.

    mm,
I have always planted my veggies/greens in blocks as well, since long rows are impossible in my given small spaces. This year however, I'm planting closer to increase variety and harvest. Thanks for the links :)

I have a small garden plot that I grow corn in. I use 1 seed per 8". 18"~20" spacing between rows. Gonna try 1 in 6" in another area this year ( same row spacing ). Been growing Silver Queen. Last year, I planted Blue Lake beans in with the corn. Started them out at the same time. Was a complete disaster! The corn plants looked like something that you would buy at a clearance sale at a company that was going out of business. I think that the corn was starved for Nitrogen since the beans were in there with them. I was told later that I might should have waited till the corn was established & growing decently before putting the beans in. I had heard of others doing runner beans in with the corn so that they could climb the corn stalks as they grew. Neat idea! Just relating an experience I had. I am sure that there are others here that know more about this than I do. They might could chime in as well.
    Have a good one!

I've seen some pictures of people doing it in pretty close together. Nothing how like the commercial farmers do it. I figure most of the uniform spacing requirements you here are becuase of the Machines they use to harvest the corn?

Here is a Image Link to my Corn. (Purple Corn from Peru)
