stairway tread finishing

I understand from my builder that finishing & staining the stair treads is very costly. Is there an alternate solution that would give the same appearance/feel yet save dollars. Is there some type of paint that could be used on the treads that would give a similar, finished look underneath the carpet runner????
Any ideas or help most welcome.

If you purchase 'porch and floor' paint, you'll get excellent durability. Some brands have limited colours available but there is one or two that will allow you to tint the base to the colour you want. I'd recommend a soft black.
