Oh yeah, he is beautiful, also white lining is quite unique. BS does not seem too bad on him, I mean some of the HTs usually get completely naked from bs.

Gorgeous rose, famously fussy. I've never attempted it.

I almost got this one because of those white edges, love that, but the arching habit put me off. I assumed it might turn into a monster here with all of our rain, and I've got plenty of those. Lol. I do like seeing pictures of it though, my old crush. :)

As beautiful . . . As TEMPTING as this rose is (based upon the bloom) I'd have to say . . . "Fool me once, shame on me . . . Fool me twice? NOPE."

I'm sure the plant I had long ago had every form of virus know to roses. It was a weak, sluggish grower, a scanty bloomer, and mildewed worse than almost anything I've ever had.

There ARE Hybrid Perpetuals I can grow here with some success. This isn't one of them.

I have no problem trying out a stunning rose such as this, even if it'll set me back quite a bit of money.. i have been head over heels for this rose for a few months, I love love LOVE hybrid prepetuals and this will be one of my first.. maybe in my zone it might behave differently!

Oh, Michael -- There should be no comparison between your environment and mine! Your conditions are wholly different.

And -- my philosophy is, if you REALLY want to try a rose, DO SO. Unless your next door neighbor failed with it, you have at least a chance of succeeding.

And if not, you will have learned from the experience.

Chris, thank you so much for that thorough and detailed response. That was great insight on HP's, I have no experience with them but do have a few austins and a grande dame that has the flower form I love. I just started gardening ladt year, a post to come about hiw that happened lol.. i feed my roses heavily, vermicompost, I add jobes organics, I trench compost and I rotate with weekly foliar and root feedings of vermicompost Tea and fish emulsion.. I have a small garden so I'm able to really focus on each rose individually and I'm a neurotic lol. I cannot peg because of my yards layout, but growing the longer canes upwards is perfectly fine, I actually have 2 gaurdman versailles oblisks that would look beautiful with roses.. we'll see.. what HP's do you grow? I am most curious about how often they repeat.. (I know it comes with age) that's why I got this rose now instead of next year.. I want to have it mature as soon as possible.. thanks again!!

I found this thread because I was trying to determine if this rose is particularly susceptible to mildew? I planted a container-root one in early fall. So far it hasn't bloomed, but it overwintered well (no dieback despite unusual below-freezing temperatures). And then today, as the roses are starting to grow again for spring, I see that it is covered in powerdery mildew. I have never seen a rose mildew at this time of year and none of my other forty or so roses seem to have it and it has not even been rainy but sunny these last few days and it's in quite a sunny spot, not a damp shady one. So I guess I was trying to determine if this is a one-off because I am already itching to SP it. The last powdery-mildew-attracting rose I had--which was a "mystery" rose from DA that was supposed to be Benjamin Britten but was this red thing that apparently is not Dr Huey either because the shape and style of the large blooms was all wrong--could never be mildrew-free during the growing season, at least not with any "safe" method, like cutting off the bad leaves, or hosing it off, or using a soap or neem oil method--it was also a blackspot and sawfly magnet and once it was gone, the health and the state of the leaves of the whole bed improved. So now I am hesitant to keep anything that is a rot/pest magnet, no matter how pretty. If anyone has any thoughts? It is really worth to try to heal it? What is the fragrance like?

I grew 'Baron Girod de l'Ain' many years ago, and it was one of the WORST of 3000 roses for both Mildew and Blackspot. When I stopped using fungicides in 2010, it quickly withered away and died. It wasn't worth trying to save, IMO.

I’m curious if anyone on this forum who lives in a semi desert climate has tried this rose. I don’t have many fungal disease issues to deal with here. Maybe it would do fine if it received afternoon shade to keep the blooms from frying?
