Congratulations in your new home. A table and chairs arrangement is most convenient near the kitchen. Maybe near the wall that is just beyond the French doors.

We would need to know what furnishings that are planned, the color your items are and what rooms the living room is open to. Choices for furniture is based on items you are keeping and personal favorite colors that will blend with those that you are keeping. For children, I would suggest a deep color for possible soil damage.

Its hard to get a proper perspective of your home because the photos are small, and panoramic? The dining would be intended for the are in front of patio doors, like the layout in this house.

The biggest mistake you could make right now is purchasing couches that are too big and encroach on dining area.

You might consider placing a round kitchen table (the smallest that will seat your family members) in the space in front of your terrace doors to the left. Leave enough space for traffic to get through and you will still have enough space on the right side as well. This will give you optimal space in your living area for sofa and other seating options. I recommend durable leather sofas for families with children. Brown leather would look nice in your room too. Good luck! Enjoy your new home!

Thanks so much!! I'm already getting a more clear vision. The picture of a similar layout really helps. I was worried it would be awkward in that spot and especially with no lighting fixture hanging down. I guess I could add one later?
Thanks for the warning about the couch size. Would a sectional plus chair be better than sofa, love seat and chair? If so, would it go against the window wall or other wall? We do not really have a preference at this point regarding couches vs. sectionals but my husband has made it clear that he's excited about his man recliner...smile... . As far as color, I am thinking light brown, some shade of grey or something in between like mocha (not sure about the proper name for the brownish-grey color).
I'll take better pictures next time I am there. These are just screen shots from zillow.
