Tween has decorated her own room. Oh no.

She LOVED it and was so excited. Unfortunately, it all peeled off in one big piece an hour later, but we fixed it together and it's back in place now.

The dilemma is this:

I'm totally fine with the posters, as I did the same thing at her age and love the self expression. Plus, it's relegated to just one wall in her own room, so she can have at it. How can I help her make it "nicer?" Should we cover the rest of the wall to give the effect of wallpaper?

Since she's gone nuts for a British band, I'm also thinking about helping her add some other elements to her room, like a union jack rug for example. Or...maybe talk her into nixing the posters in favor of a giant union jack painted on that wall?

Would love ideas if you have them. :)

I think a big union jack chair would be fab, but there are more ideas here http://www.houzz.com/photos/products/union-jack

I think you could take a white chair from a secondhand store and easily paint it yourself too

    That chair is pretty great.

The posters are fun, it will be fine for awhile. When I was a teenager I had Duran Duran all over my wall. It lasted for about a year, then it all came down. Have fun.

Hey, Mom, it's not up to you to make it nicer. She loves the wall, and so do I! Let her enjoy her creation until she's ready to change it.

I agree with Carolyn. When I had Def Leppard, L.A. Guns, Wham!, and the Monkees on my walls in the 80s (at varying times, of course), those posters meant everything to me. I even kept a few favorites after I took them down. I think they're still around somewhere in some box.

It's the band that she likes. I doubt she cares whether they are Brits or not, so I can't imagine why she would want to get rid of the posters and replace them with the Union Jack. It looks really cute and very "tween", which is what she is, and most important, it's her very own design. Give her some ideas, but let her decide what she wants...no "talking her into" your vision. :-)

It sounds like the posters are harmless. Thank goodness she didn't decorate with "gharish pink" paint as my designer refers to my step-daughter's old room.

Okay, here's my two cents, and it is based entirely on individual, personal experience. My mother always let me decorate my own room, from an impossibly young age. But she didn't let me redecorate it (at least not the expensive items like furniture) very often. This forced me to live with the ghastly choices I made in my style-challenged youth (the memory of bubblegum pink walls and a gold and white pseudo-French provincial mirror chosen at age eight still make me shudder). This experience, in turn, taught me the value of good, well-considered design and careful planning, and made me the opposite of an impulse shopper. I think and plan and research very carefully before I buy anything because I hate the thought of having to live with poorly-considered designs. Maybe I would have been like this anyway, but I've always ascribed my interest in questions of design and my cautious purchasing habits to my mother's parenting philosophy. Looking back in retrospect, her quiet patience with choices that must have made her shudder was positively heroic.

I suffered through the pink and zebra phase for two years, before my daughter came to me and told me that she wanted a more grown up room. I helped guide her into a room that is definitely still her, but a little more mature. Greige walls, pale blue-green bedding, crystal lamps, the existing custom zebra valances, and black and white accents. The poster phase will pass, just grit your teeth and smile!

OMG Charmean, my mom let me put my Duran Duran posters all over my traditional floral wallpaper in the '80s :). Honestly, I think this is EXACTLY how a tween's posters should look, but if it' making you nuts, space them out with the same amount of blue paint showing in between them for more uniformity.

I love the Union Jack suggestions, this is another piece I love:

I like the wall paper idea! Fill all the wall areas in with poster or poster pieces. I like it!

Thanks you guys! We've added a few more goodies and brought in a large wardrobe for her clothes. We've strategically hung a large union jack inside the cupboard on the back wall and it is ADORABLE.

Btw, I had Duran Duran, the cure, all kinds of stuff on my walls too. :) Nick was my favorite.

Live with what she chose for now because when she is just a few years older, like l7/18 and is leaving for college, she will want to redecorate in a more mature style. I know from experience.

she is a tween. today is British bands.... tomorrow who knows. Do not spend too much money on fads. Fads is all bout being a tween. finding your style.
