Where do you grow?

17 years ago

Inspired by a recent thread about what people say about your collections, and also by Vilcat's envy inducing sunroom, I started wondering where everyone grows. Or more accuratley, what it *looks* like. So, get out your cameras and post some pictures of your growing range!

I've added a few more racks since I took these photos, and also grow plants on my front stoop, but this will at least ge things started...

    Here is a little video of the inside of my sunroom two years ago. I am NO videographer, for sure, so it is a bit wobbly and blurry at times. In the background are rainforest sounds from my son's "sound machine" to add a little atmosphere.

    Here is a link that might be useful: Greenhouse video

    Here's the pottery/staging area. I'm getting ready for a show May 1st and 16th.

    Everywhere else is a mess this time of year transitioning from winter protection to summer exposure.

    I'm still getting set up in my shade house. The main purpose of the shade house was for orchids-hehe!
    I still need some decent tables in there. I was looking for some at the box stores today w/o luck so may have to build them.
    I have a real concern with my succulent babies and the great outdoors. We are fixing to go into our rainy season where it can rain everyday. One summer a few years ago I kept a record of rain: 60" in just a few months. I know there are some tough things that will take that much water 'cas I see them growing here...I'll just have to be careful!

    LMAO vilcat. I loved the two cats just kinda loungin' around in your sunroom...I love kitties......

    Is that a wollemia in the second pic?

  • 17 years ago

    Sharp eye amccour, that is indeed my Wollemia nobilis. Hasn't really done a whole lot for me since I'm probably keeping it too dry. I'm planning to pot it into a richer mix soon which will hopefully help me keep the moisture up.

    Very NICE everyone!! Its a great thread Jo, gives us an idea on how and where some of us are growing our plants.

    Nothing fancy...but it works for me.

    I don't grow many things in containers, but I do grow some succulents in the ground. Here is one of the areas in which I have some succulents planted. All are still very young plants but there are some Agave Desmettiana, Aloe Arborescens, Aloe Striata, Manfredas, Kalanchoes, Crassulas, Sedums... The potted plants on top of the A/C unit are Aloe Excelsa, Aloe Plicatilis, Aloe Alooides and Agave Vilmorniana waiting to be put in the ground.

    {{gwi:527775}}

    And here's an area where I have some of the not-so-friendly agaves and aloes. These plants are also very young, but here I have Agave Americana, Aloe Peglerae, Aloe Marlothii, Beschorneria Yuccoides, Agave Desertii, Agave Angustifolia, Agave Murpheyi,

    I grow anywhere with enough light. My small GH off my kitchen is packed...
    {{gwi:527777}}
    {{gwi:527778}}
    {{gwi:527779}}

    Then I have a sunroom off my livingroom...
    {{gwi:527780}}
    {{gwi:527781}}

    And there are plants in front of every other window in the house - above the kitchen sink...
    {{gwi:527782}}

    My bedroom, above and all over my dresser...
    {{gwi:527784}}

    You guys who can grow outside most (or all) of the year got it SOOO good! Us northerners can't grow just anything, except for the few that have unobstructed greenhouses that get sun all day. Oh, well, what would I do with another few hundred plants? It would be a full time job!

    in the winter I grow all most every thing in the basement under lights, some are in the kitchen window or the office windows, then comes spring and when its starts staying in the mid to upper 50s they get moved to the shade house, when you hit over 500 plants of all sizes you got to find room some place. here are a few pic of the basement and the shade house from last year

    Gardenbear... Maxi looks like she's on the verge of a sun-nap! (Assuming "she" - hope that's right...) How old is she? Pets and the love of plants seem to go together, don't they? Seems like when I'm puttering around with my plants, my pets (one dog, two cats) seem to be as contented as I am, like they pick up on my serenity!

    Denise, your right Maxi is a she, she took over the shade house right after I got her,she came from animal shelter 4 years ago,she is some where around 10, and loves to be out in the yard when I'm working, she naps alot but never misses a squirrel, she love to roll in the grass right after I mow it then has green spots all over her from the grass LOL

    I grow my plants at several location in my back garden, some in the ground, other on tables in the shade house, other in direct sun with a 30% shade cloth, others in my small green house if they can not tolerate direct sun, or cold, and need protection, they have a roof over their head, at least. The ones not in the ground are in pots, according to the size of the plant. Norma

    Jeez. If I had a plant shed like that I'd be tempted to move my bed out there and call it home :) Really nice work!

  • 17 years ago

    How about where I'm about to grow?

    Setting up a bed to grow Aloes, mainly polyphylla. I have 15 4-5yo plants and it's hard to keep the roots cool in containers here when the temps are over 90f. The placement of the bed will give it protection from the hot afternoon sun. I'll probably put a few other Aloes I have laying around in as well.

    well, spring may come this weekend to Chicago, so I will post my stuff once it gets moved outside!

  • 17 years ago

    Nice areas, folks! Gargaile, I love your Jades.

    Sorry I'm a bit late to the game. Anyway, here's where I grow. Back deck - a couple views. I haven't moved the succulent tables outside yet, but I've been sunning my Jades on the patio table (as seen). The last two pics are of a little south-east corner of the house where I keep my outside trees over the winter. The concrete slab (don't know why it was orginally poured) provides extra warmth.
