One of the crape myrtle cultivars should work and the root systems are good.

From the looks of the location I have the feeling you are looking for a tree to shade the window. If that is the purpose a deciduous tree would probably be best to allow the light in the winter, a crape myrtle would be a good choice. I would grow one of the indian named varieties as a multi-trunked tree that would do well(less mildew problem)in the bay area, and be easier to keep within bounds. Al

You might do just as well with planting a shrub that could be trained as a multi-trunk small tree. A couple that come to mind might include Feijoa sellowana, Arbutus unedo compacta, Strawberry Guava/Psidium cattleianum. If you are so close to the bay, you may not get enough heat to have a Crape Myrtle bloom, I know it is a very shy bloomer for me here in Berkeley a half-mile from the bay. If you are not in the hotter south bay area, I regular Japanese Maple may do just fine in this location.

If you were looking for interesting foliage color, you could also use Purple Smoke Bush/Cotinus coggygria 'Royal Purple' or the Purple Australian Willow. One of the upright and showy foliage colored Leucadendron salignum cultivars could also fit there nicely.

Just to second bahia that marine influence bodes well for Japanese maples and ill for crepe myrtles.

Given how close you're planting to the foundation there, you might want to consider "Oshio Beni," which is slightly smaller-growing variant of "Sango Kaku" (the coral bark maple most people have).

I forget how big the Bay is. We're near the Richmond-San Rafael bridge, so not too hot. I have a variegated maple in the back yard. It gets a couple of hours less of sun, but the leaves are slightly crispy right now. The red one in the front yard (less sun, but hot sun) gets cripsy around August. I will ask at my nursery about both the maple and the crepe myrtle. I don't believe I've ever seen a crepe myrtle around here, so I'm not sure if that means they wouldn't do well. They are pretty though.

I'll also take your list, bahia, thanks. I just remembered, I have a viburnum that I need to move (it's going to outgrow the space it's in now). I think it's supposed to get 10-12 feet tall. Could I perhaps use that here?? Can viburnums be pruned into a tree-like shape?
