scotttyyd, What kind of pets are you trying to protect? Puppies or young dogs?

You can probably google for a list of plant materials that are toxic if eaten or chewed by young dogs. When my dogs were young they tore bark off of pines and cedars and played tug of war with branches torn off euonymous and leucothoe shrubs and both the dogs and the shrubs survived just fine.
Young,boisterous dogs can be very destructive to your landscape investments but the trees and shrubs can be replaced.
The only things I can strongly advise against planting are oleander and golden chain(not rain) tree (think laburnum).
All parts and seedpods are highly toxic to kids and animals.
Low maintainance euonymous,loropetalum(except it needs annual hard trimming),butterfly bushes(annual trimback),leucothoe,small leaf hollys(not the spiny ones)like damper spots.
