The wood floor looks like it has a strong yellow undertone and same with the cabinets, so I'd be more likely to go with a yellow-based green or blue palette throughout this area, with the darkest shade going on the fireplace wall. If you're really intent on gray, then go for very light gray or charcoal gray on the fireplace wall and a gray-based light green, white, pale blue or lavender. I'm not a fan of this color combo, but some folks like yellow with gray. Whatever color scheme you choose, find a coordinating white (or gray) for the ceiling and trim.

Wow, thanks so much Shari; I definitely needed an artist's eye for color. I've never painted walls before as a renter! I agree with you on the gray/yellow or gray/beige paint combo-- way too earthy, nothing will pop in a modern way. I love your ideas for how to coordinate charcoal and light gray. I'm going to try it out on mydeco!

Congrats that you've done good for yourself and have a home to call your own , when does this place become empty of the previous owners stuff ? coz its weekend time , just want to chill (lol) btw do have some art in here , shari is celebrated Artist ! there is a new collection of her fabric as well which has just come out , make this place a mix of traditional ,classic and french , first clear the place .

Well the walls might not need to be changed. But I would opt for White Dove on the other walls.

What does your furniture look like and what color is existing in the sofa and rug?

I'd like to see a medium gray on the fireplace and window walls and white on the other walls and ceiling. I'm thinking Sherwin-Williams SW7016 Mindful Gray or 7017 Dorian Gray. Pick up samples of each and try them on poster board, looking at the colors in daylight and also in the evenings before making your final selection.

Thanks for the photo. I also have these in my look book. Like your photo, for things to be bright, seems like need to have a non gray couch, though something light for a couch seems like asking for trouble!

Are you familiar with Flexsteel brand furniture? For the Digby sofa there is a fabric that is wonderful. It appears to be actual suede but is not. It is tough, cleanable and there is a beautiful soft, silvery gray color way, called Kashmira, and described as having "leather-like qualities". I have used this in three homes and it is worth taking a look at. Hope this helps.

@Houssaon: like the idea of working with the sage green, a color i used to love. but, i was doubting whether I could do punchy, saturated accent colors for pillows/paintings or have to go more muted. i had a sage green couch for a while.

Sold most of my stuff before moving, so this can be a pretty blank canvas.
Have a brown leather recliner similar to the chair in above and a midcentury modern brazilian rosewood draw leaf table with that style of chair with black leather seats. like the below, but warmer, with red tones.
