Giant Sequoia Seedling Pruning??

I have a Sequoia seedling about 8 inches tall. Some of the lower brances turned brown and black and I thought the whole seedling might die but then new green growth started growing and the brown and black stuff stopped at the lowest little branches. should I cut those dead branches off or just leave them on and let them fall off on their own?

What growing conditions? Did it get over-watered?

I had originally potted it in a peat based soil and after it started turning brown someone suggested putting it in cactus mix, well ever since then the browning stopped and now new growth has started. Should I trim the brown ones off?

There's green under at least some of that brown, don't remove that. On a small seedling like that, I think I'd leave it alone for now.

I'd leave it as it is, there's good new growth there. Right move on changing to cactus mix! Peat is awful for conifer seedlings.
