I live in Oakland, near Orlando and have a lychee. Because it is in the front yard, I never protected from the cold. It is not as cold sensitive as a mango would be. It is probably better to protect it from the winds when young.
All my fruit trees are planted with some black cow mixed with the native soil 50/50.

Hi Silvia, you're SO lucky your Lychee tree survived! What a beautiful tree! I lost (2) lychee trees 2 years ago from the freeze and I live 2 hours south of Orlando (Highlands County). I am however Very stubborn and giving it one more try :o)

I planted another one last year in Feb. and it survived the 3 freezes we had this winter.

This is 'Mauritius' variety...it was the only one they had left when I was looking for one. Mine didn't bloom this year so I decided to tip prune it and is putting out new growths now. Silvia is right and its best to protect it from wind for at least the first year or two till the plant gets established. The young tender new leaves are very sensitive to wind. Hi Silvia, sounds like a great variety of fruits coming your way. BTW, I meant to tell you my young Loquat tree fruited for the firt time this year and they were delicious!

I picked up a Brewster lychee at the Leu Gardens plant sale today. Also got a Lula avocado and some blueberries.

I hadn't planned to buy quite yet, but there were some good deals, so now I'm going to be busy preparing the locations for these.

Good for you! I always like the sales at Lou gardens, I bought a few citrus there from a vendor one year...

When planting the avocado make sure the spot has a good drainage, I have a Brogdon that I love! and I have it planted in a mound, has a lot of sun exposure and good drainage.

Thanks Silvia, I would love the recipe (hopefully its easy to make,lol...)making jams and jellies always intimidates me :o( I'm hoping by next year I will have more fruit than this year. Silvia, is Brogdon avocado self fruitful...doesn't need two trees to fruit? Also is it more cold tolerant than other varieties?

Yes Nancy, the Brogdon is the more cold tolerant and self fruitful that I know. I only had one in the backyard producing fruits till this year that I planted a second one in the front yard, it is still small.
The Brogdon is too big to protect from the cold now, it is probably 15 feet tall and 12 feet wide and every year I get a lot of avocados, has the flavor that I prefer from all the avocados that I tasted locally. And the fruit can be frozen in individual containers. It is one of the great additions for the yard...
