I agree that a buffet would be better than a china cabinet.

My first thought is "great spot to dedicate to wine!", which tells you a lot about me... How about a floor to ceiling bottle storage made out of reclaimed dark wood? Or half that and the other a spot for a wine frig and serving area with glasses above?

I love the ideas with floating shelves and would add graphic b/w or color painting on its' sides. I am sure that would look pretty unusual and won't take a space for artwork.

I would also add painting on the side of a wall (picture 2) between rooms.

Either floating shelves or a bold credenza would really wake up the room. You could also paint the niche a different color or wallpaper it. I would also bring in some plants to make the room lush. Maybe a large fern in one corner?

I am agreeing with Manon, the floating shelves. I also agree with the other comments that some art on the walls will add interest to the room. I think the wall color is fine with your furniture, I would, however, change the chandelier to something more contemporary that makes a statement. If you have a fabric drum type of chandelier, that would bring more texture and color into the room at eye level. Covering the seats of your chairs to something that would add color and coordinate with any artwork is a good idea also.

I would go for a sideboard the same color as your dining set (maybe that's what everyone means when they say buffet?). I think floating shelves above is a cool idea, but I would even consider putting a mirror with table lamps on either side of the mirror. Create place to put some shelves or artwork. It would look beautiful if you painted it a color on the back wall. Or reverse if you paint the walls, leave it white to highlight display. It can even be a small bar storage at the botton with cabinets and shelving above. Great space to have!

I would like to see a rounded shape chandelier for your dining room. It has a lot of straight lines and angles. something round will lend some softness. Something similar to the first one you posted above or like below, perhaps.



As far as buffet/floating shelves finish, you have to decide if you want the niche to blend in or stand out. A lighter finish (tonally similar to the wall color) will make it recede whereas a darker finish will make it stand out.

You might want to rethink the shutters if you're moving towards a contemporary look. I'd love to see some texture in this room. Panels are great way to do this, they'll also impart a bit more softness.

I found these chairs and thought the simple elegant lines might appeal to you.

I love Manon's idea of floating shelves. There are two different finishes shown in the picture - and they seem to relate nicely so go with something similar or as suggested, blend them in or make them stand out. I love accent colors behind shelves but that's personal. This will be beautiful, I'm sure, when you're done!

In the cove area it really can be used as anything you need it to be. Do you need more storage? a display area? or something just to fill in that space? I would also suggest painting the room to make it a little more formal and inviting since it is a dining room space.

Great cove area! Its not too large. Just enough space for a small buffet table that reflects your style topped with some nice knick-knacks and a beautiful place for a nice piece of artwork. At holiday season, you can dress the buffet to match that season and make it festive. Lots of room to have fun!
