I'm wanting to plant some herbs in containers and have a bunch leftover from my failed gardening attempts in the past. Could anyone recommend a good basic book? I have a lot of the trough-type containers sold at walmart, 3 half-whiskey barrels, and some 5 gal pails along with some misc pots of various sizes. I'm just not sure which type of pot to use and which ones need what kind of shade.Houston gets very hot and my deck area gets a lot of sun in certain areas and holds heat big-time. I don't think shade in the north is the same as shade here temperature-wise. I like the looks of the half barrels much much better than the 5 gal pails and even the troughtype containers.

also would you advise I start from seed? a friend told me to fill pots 2/3 with packing peanuts or something light like vermiculite, layer some newspaper, then a good quality soil and plant some seeds then repeat a few weeks later so I have a fresh crop. I was thinking an actual plant would be better since I'm not having to start from scratch and cross my fingers the seeds will make it!

anyways, I'm really excited about trying this and wanting to cook with them and have some for looks and scent so any advice would be appreciated such as where to locate them, what should be planted together or could be planted together..some I"m thinking I want are various mints, basil, parsley, dill, chives, cilantro, rosemary.I guess I'm just not sure how to control the growth or what kind of growth to expect since all the pics I see show the 'perfect' plant. someone needs to write a book for my area and show what happens when various things are done or not done...
