I'd certainly plant it in a protected position on the warm side of your property.

Thanks for the info! I will definitely give it a shot. My Lavender, that many folks don't think should survive our Winters, does very nicely. The Lady I purchased it from lives in the Northern portion of Lower Michigan, so her Winter's get pretty cold. I'm quite a bit further South. What do you recommend for mulching it?

Absolutely mulch it, and pile on some extra for the winter.

I use cypress mulch, but you could use any that works for you.

I'd pile on six inches or so of chopped straw.

Rosemary "Arp" is the hardiest variety of rosemary so it's worth a try. Try to grow it in a raised bed, next to your home (south is best). Make sure the soil is very well-draining. You can add some coase sand. It will thrive in soil that is less than fertile. I have overwintered Arp in my zone in a raised bed. It is variable though in hardiness even in a zone 7. One winter it bloomed in February (nice lavender flowers; other winters it died). I don't think it appreciates a lot of wet weather.

Thanks Njoasis! Do any of you folks think it is necessary to cover it, or wrap it (with burlap??) for the winter? If I put it in a raised bed, it would be fairly easy to tack burlap over it...

My lavenders always survives but my Arp rosemary doesn't, no matter how deep the mulch, as our winters are just too long and cold. So I take a few cuttings each fall, overwinter them in the house, and transplant them in the garden come spring. I always end up with several big rosemary plants each year, all from a single plant.
