We bought this 1941 home and have put most of our budget into systems- new plumbing, furnace, roof etc. So now I am going to have the kitchen and dining room painted to spruce them up a bit. I am working with the existing elements, not planning to make any changes to countertops etc until later.
First issue- the wallpaper mural in the dining room is going to stay, as my husband really likes it and I can live with it. The pictures are a little off, color wise, but it is dark green and lighter green on a (somewhat yellowed) pale beige background. (the picture makes it look as though there are some pink tones, and this is incorrect.) I want to paint one color below the chair rail and one above. I am leaning toward a very dark green below, but stuck on what to do above. I want there to be a good amount of contrast between the two colors.
Also coming into play is the kitchen right next to it. I want the colors in the two rooms to look good next to each other, as you look from one room into the other. I want to make the light honey color of the cabinets look good and stand out, and also there is a dark green stripe going all the way around the edge of the countertops. Also there is an architectural detail at the above the cabinets that I want to highlight, not sure but I think I will do this and the ceiling white.
I am very drawn to earth tones, and olive green is my favorite color.
