Hosta suggestions to eventually hide this.......

beautiful tank. My husband just pulled a bush out of here. I want to extend the area out even with the tank and down 15 feet. There is rock garden farther down that I want to replace with hostas.

So, I need an x-large hosta to plant at the end of the tank that can handle sun thru mid afternoon.

Any ideas appreciated.

Thanks!

Ms Jo

I've seen those in WI painted in Holstein colors. Could you paint it to look like big hosta leaves?

Why not art in the garden? Example: Hosta Ball, made with pix of hosta leaves, then decoupaged.

Maryann, your hosta ball is just too cool! And I like the idea of painting the tank itself, too. Solid green would be a good place to start, and quick, as well. Add details later.

Hosta: Sagae can get mighty big. I have had an accidental experiment the past year. A new Krossa Regal was waiting out in the sun to make sure it doesn't have HVX before joining its brother in the shade. In one year, the sunny one caught up to and passed the rather hefty side of its shady sibling!

Krossa Regal is blue and upright and tall, so think about it mixed in with shorter, wider, greener hosta. :)

maryann, that's exactly what I told my husband when he said it needed to be painted! I could paint hostas on it.
I love the decoupage hosta ball, beautiful. What better way to bring hostas indoors.

Yes, I thought of Sagae, Krossa Regal and Sum & Substance. All would be beautiful.

    Thanks!

I cover my gas meter and pipes with a huge Sagae... but it only lasts for the couple of months of hosta season. I'd combine the suggestions - big hosta... Sagae or maybe a S&S sport like Lady Isobel Barnett - AND paint it.

I love the idea of Artie Shaw from Laugh In with his bespectacled German soldier saying "interesting... verrrry interesting!" peeking out through the hostas...

    submarine idea is cute

If the sight of the tank bothers you a lot, hostas will only hide it part of the year. I would put up some lattice (you can get it in white plastic at Lowes or HD) far enough from the tank to allow servicing, and then plant my hostas around the base of the fence.

Why not go for something really big...like EMPRESS WU???

WOW! Took a look at Empress Wu.....HUGE!

I like the submarine idea with blue hostas....very fun!

Now if I had the talent to paint something other than a room, I'd be in luck!

I really only want to hide the end of the tank, hence where the bush used to be.

Thanks for all the ideas, I'll let you know what I end up with.

Check first. Many places it is not legal to paint these tanks. Do a search on the Garden Junk forum if you want to read a lot of discussion on this.

I would put a couple of hydragea bushes in from of that or maybe a trellis first, with clematis climbing over it, then put hostas in place. The clematis and hydrangea will take a bit more sun than the hostas would too.

Yikes! I went and looked up Empress Wu after Ken mentioned it in another thread saying all it really needs is sun and water to get biiiiiig.

    and YIKES!!!

Here is a link that might be useful: Hosta Library: Empress Wu

I love the hosta ball. Imagine painting image of tall hosta plants on the tank and then surrounding it with living plants...

Would agree with the idea of lattice or maybe a picket fence around the tank first for a year-round eyesore barrier. Then plant lots of great hosta.
DH built a 3-sided picket fence around our air conditioning unit, the back side is completely open. Stands just on the edge of the concrete pad so plenty of air space. The fence can be easily lifted away for maintenance. Painted it to match the house, blends in well, makes a nice background for the hosta.
