Specimen was probably an example of 'SHN' cultivar, originating from a tree at Sonoma Horticultural Nursery in California. Some general garden centers have been stocking it in recent years; often it flowers in a 5 gallon pot - due no doubt to the stock sold being vegetative propagations of the original that share its sexual maturity. The multiyear wait for flowering is encountered with seedlings (specimens raised from seed) that have to reach sexual maturity before they bloom.

The main point of 'SHN' is actually plus-sized bracts, considerably larger than usual.
