Ideas for plants

I have two areas in my yard that need shrubs and I am not familiar with enough of them to know what to pick. One area is very dry and gets afternoon sun. I have planted hostas there only to have them dry out - even though I water them well. The other area is never in sun, although it's bright. A rhododendron is planted there, which does well, but it needs a companion. I was thinking about another rhodie, but was wondering if there was something different. My yard is rather small, so I have an unwritten rule that I don't duplicate plants. Silly, I know. Does anyone have any ideas at all? Thanks in advance.
