I don't know your answer, but wanted to post a similar question on this thread. Are there any lilies that deer won't eat? They seem to be eating everything this year, even rockrose and conifers. Only the daffodils are untouched.

First I'd like to know how you can tell the deer are there when you aren't! Ha! Anyway, it might be better to plant a choice item like this in a more controlled situation whether deer are involved or not - I certainly wouldn't risk it. If the country place really is where you want to put everything then you should try to get it fenced effectively. You'll need a tall one for the deer with finer wire at the bottom, to exclude rabbits. The bottom will have to be partly buried or made rigid so that neither kind of animal is able to slip underneath. The wire or plastic used for the main part of the fence will also have to be fine enough to prevent small deer from squeezing through, I have actually had this happen in front of me - the fleeing animal grunting as though in pain, adding to the unpleasantness of finding it inside the enclosure in the first place.

Lilies are manna to a multitude of pests, including viruses. Daffodils are poisonous. Nevertheless, slugs climb them to destroy the flowers on some planting sites.

The country place is where you live all the time. An additional reason to secure your garden with deer fencing.

Yes,Bboy, the house in the country is our one and only house, though we work in the city. My main garden with small orchard, vegetable beds and main flower/perennial beds are all enclosed within a deer fence, the first thing I put in. The place where I would like to put the Podophyllum is the East facing side of our house. In order to fence it, I would ahve to put a fence around our 10 acres, which would be prohibitive. My DH is clear that he doesn't want trees right up against the house (fire reasons), so I thought I would plant something lush and more ephemeral. I am of course, open to suggestion from more experienced gardeners.

I have found great success in using Liquid Fence (http://www.liquidfence.com/). I buy the concentrated bottle and mix it up as I need. It goes a long way. I keep two spray bottles of the stuff handy: one at the front porch and one at the back. Once a week I take a leisurely walk around the property and spritz their favorites trees, shrubs and vegetation. It really seems to work, and you're basically training them to stay away from certain plants. Unfortunately, in the link below, you can see where I forgot to spray a bed of tulips. Oh well, you live and learn.
