What Purple Rhodie Is This? (pic)

Hi! I go past this gorgeous rhododendron when I go for runs. It looks a little bit more purple in person. I took this picture on Thursday, it is in full bloom right now. To my disappointment my house only had dwarf rhodies when I moved in. At least I get to pick out the ones I plant. I got some Jean Maries, and some Taurus'. (I had a post earlier about red rhodies.) I like true reds and purples. I already have a Blue Diamond and a couple PJM's, but want more of this grape colored one. Thanks for your help!

Here is a picture of my Purple Splendor. It's a lot darker than the Rhodie pictured, which obviously isn't a Purple Splendor.

Gee there's so many Rhodie's that look alike, try the link below and look at all the purples that have pictures. Maybe you'll find it there or maybe you'll find one you like better. It's worth a try.

I'm not sure which one that is but if you like purple, there is nothing like the purple of a 'Jonathan Shaw'. Mine is just now opening. You can see a picture of the blossom on Downs Rhododendrons website. It's really something!

Today I bought a 'Lee's Dark Purple' and a 'Purple Splendour.' I bought them at Peninsula Gardens where they are having a great Rhodie Sale. The 'Lee's Dark Purple' is blooming right now. It is exactly the color I was looking for. Grape purple. The 'Purple Splendour' has yet to bloom. Thanks for the Rhodie ID site, I bookmarked it aftermidnight - I asked my mother to pick me up a 'Jonathan Shaw' at Al's in Sherwood, Oregon boxofrox. I looked at Al's Garden Center's site, and they have an amazing variety of Rhodies available! Lucky Oregonians!

You'll really like the 'Jonathan Shaw'. The blooms are exquisite. I've had mine in about 4 years now and it's still nice and compact. I also have a 'Wojnar's Purple' that is just finishing and some 'Purple Slendor' azaleas that are done and plucked. My 'Gibraltar' is just about done so my spring fling is almost over. 'Jonathan Shaw' is my finale but it always makes me hum a few bars of "Save the Best for Last"

Purple Splendor is an older variety & it has a tendency to have sprawling growth. I have one that was here when I bought 16 years ago. I s'pose I should prune it to try for a fuller look, but I rather like the architectural qualities it displays. I sometimes tuck potted plants that need a little shade beneath its branches. It is my last rhody to begin blooming & is just nicely under way now. Gotta love purple!

I lost a 'Purple Splendour' to mildew in Island County recently. Different cultivars vary in ability to withstand chronic infestations.

I love Rhododendrons, wish I had room for bigger ones. I've crammed in a lot of dwarves though.
