Scarlet Runner Beans -- Blossom drop off

Can anyone help here , I used to grow these with a great deal of success at the coast in Richmond, with best results in August and September, with a lot of blossom drop in July & August.

Since moving to the N. Okanagan last year, where 35 - 40 deg C is not uncommon, this problem has got a lot worse. I thought that it must be the high heat that is causing this and this year erected a Bean frame on the east side of the house that only gets the sun till noon, but I still have the same problem and have not seen a bean form at all this year.!

Any suggestions would be much appreciated

I think it's excessive heat that makes the beans drop their flowers, when it cools down some the problem should go away.

Brian Minter was talking about this problem on his CBC phone in show last Thursday -- someone from the coast had the same problem. He said to stress the plants and they will start to produce. I wonder if they aren't the right variety of beans to grow in the Okanagan?

Glad you mentioned the beans.

I forgot I grew them on 14' bamboo when we were in Beaverton. Go to the top in about 4 weeks, then filled in. It was an eight pole TeePee of bamboo poles.

When we get back to Washington County, that's one I plan to grow again. Nice plant for food and flower.

I just discovered these this year. They are a blast and very beautiful. Next year I'm going to copy my neighbor with a 10-12' tee pee in pot! stunning and fun and edible!
