St John's Wort, Hypericum calycinum, is a tough groundcover that can handle almost anything but a shady bog. It is sometimes subject to a rust that can make it look bad.
I have a bit of St. John's Wort located in the hottest, sunniest, driest, thin soiled, part of my property and it's doing fine, even under some Doug Firs. One patch, no more. I mow it every few years.
Spreads by runners only. Suitable for malls and parking strips that get a lot of abuse. Not for a well loved cottage garden.
