Sweetpea, I don't know the answer to your question but it occurs to me that Hood River in Oregon is so windy that it's known as the wind surfing capital of America, & is also famous for growing pears, cherries, & peaches. Especially pears.

That Hood River area was the first thing that came to mind when I read the post.

It can get quite cold up there in winter.

It occurs to me that the most important thing is not so much which tree you plant, but that you train it to handle the wind.

Most nurseries prune off the lower limbs of their fruit trees very early to encourage vertical growth, so by the time you buy them they look very tall, but their trunks will also be very brittle. So first, buy a smaller tree, preferably one that can bend easily without breaking. Cherries at least grow pretty fast.

Second, don't stake it. It's precisely that swaying in the wind that causes the trunk to firm up, so let it bend and it'll stay strong. The tree may "lean," but that's natural.

Third, prune it to a central leader. Many people cut off the leader of their fruit trees at about 5-6 ft. to create an "open center" or "vase" shape. This keeps the height of the tree down but will probably lessen its stability.
