I also have a flowering quince whose flowers look just like your pictures in the spring. Mine is only a few years old, and about 4 feet high. I've had fruit every year. My quince are now just ripening- they turn yellow and fall off when this happens. They are much bigger than a jack's ball, shaped somewhat like a pear, in that the stem end is skinnier, but overall are the size of a baseball. I don't do anything special, meaning I never fertilize this shrub.

It's a flowering quince. There are many varieties, and the fruits are variable in size. Mine are the size of walnuts. They are mostly used for their pectin content, the juice added to jams and jellies. Pectin content tends to fall when the fruit ripens.

What are you going to use the fruits for?

Nice blooms! I see a lot of flowering quince (Chaenomeles japonica ) plants that either make small fruit or fruit that doesn't seem to fully ripen. Thinning the fruit should help, but even so some types of flowering quinces don't make high quality or large fruit.

The fruiting types (Cydonia oblonga) tend to have white or pink-blushed white blooms and large, flat leaves and produce quite large fruit (though some flowering quinces come in white flowerin cultivars too, but the large leaves are the indicator to me when not blooming). I'd say there's nothing wrong with your plant at all and there's probably not much you can do to get better fruit from it other than thinning out some of the fruit.

Thanks! I guess I'll just resign myself. It only puts out 8-9 fruits, so thinning isn't going to help. :-)

You're right - the flowers are very nice...it just doesn't have much else to say for itself the other 50 weeks a year...getting some fruit out of it would have been a plus!
