Timing implies cutting it back very hard was involved. Otherwise, maybe it was the weather we had this year. I would look at it as the flowering on new growth enables you to cut it back - if you must - and still have some production, rather than that you should cut it back hard.

Also think I've read they fruit better if others are nearby kind of planted as a group instead of singular. I first saw them at Windmill Gardens near the pond store & thought those metallic purple berries were fake! Definitely on my want list for winter color in the garden!

There used to be a row of callicarpa along the front of my local library here in Tacoma. Aside from the incredible color of the purple berries (and there were only a few), the bushes looked ratty all year long.

Then I went to Florida! The callicarpa I saw there in December were amazingly beautiful: large, well leafed out, and had tons of berries.

Callicarpa may be hardy to Zone 6, but they are native to the American South and do much better there.

'Profusion' is prevalent in commerce and of Asian origin, able to fruit adequately without cross-pollination.

I have a 'Profusion' and it does fruit really well but the shrub itself isn't anything to write home about....
