The news article from an 8 August publication my wife has on the refrigerator states "separate paper bag, bucket, or box". We have been using a paper bag, set out alongside the bins. No recycler complaints so far. In wet weather we may double-bag or try plastic bags, assuming the collector will be careful when picking up. The City shouldn't expect you to shell out more money for the recycling program.

As far as I'm aware, locally we can't use plastic bags for curbside recycling. But, because practices vary among the various refuse handlers, you might call yours for suggestions.

Or, the next buckets you buy, drill several obvious holes in the bottom. Leaky bucket; oh oh, not worth swiping!

On a similar topic, we had three of the yellow bins because our neighbor did not use one of his and the garbage man took the third one. Said we were not allowed to have 3.

Yep, buyorsell the same thing happened to us, there was one bin here when we moved in & they gave us two when we signed up for service, but then they took the third one away. I did call Heiberg Garbage, our hauler. The former policy was to separate the glass, in a paper sack & set it inside the yellow bin with the plastic & metal. Now glass needs to be in a separate "rigid" container. Every time we didn't do it right we got a flyer from Heiberg, with some Glass Only stickers. It's OK to put glass in the yellow bin, but then you can't put out some other category of recycling until next week. Fine if you don't have much recycling & don't worry about vermin. The lady at Heiberg suggested writing our address on all recycling containers, and like Jean said to put holes in the buckets. Somehow I think there are plenty of people out there who would steal a leaky bucket. From what the nice lady at Heiberg said, they are getting a lot of complaints. Some of my more irritable neighbors are threatening to stop recycling altogether. We also had the scandal of our recycling not actually being recycled, but put in the landfill. That's a whole nuther story.

We also use Far West Fibers for recycling on occasion; they accept a far wider range of stuff. It's not curbside, but you get absolute control on how and when you recycle.
