If you tend to lean towards a more traditional style I would add wood work and a mantle. If you lean towards a more modern look you can paint it. Transitional a bit of both. Good Luck!

Thank you Amy for the suggestion and the pics . I had a contractor come in and suggest the same as well.

First wash all the smoke off with a TSP cleaner, wear glove. Then decide if you want to go modern or traditional. Amy's pics above are great. You should have a mantel, Full width is more modern, framing the fireplace with vertical elements will make it look more traditional. If you don't like the color, consider a masonry paint after cleaning. You can also tile it for a sleeker look. Built-ins work with both styles.

If its your forever home - I'd make it cozier by adding built-in cabinetry, adding something around it will make it feel more like a feature in your home rather than an after thought.

HI -- Yes , you sure need to paint this fireplace , the brick is not very nice looking BUT I think it needs to wider maybe about a foot on each side . Look into refacing or cladding it in stone or a granite tile. Also replacing the hearth base is needed .
