Backsplash Help

Remodeled 1985 kitchen. Color on the walls - stoney path from Lowes, natural cherry cabinets, will be Silestone quartz stellar snow countertops as well as black on the bar top, teak floors, walnut stained oak trim and baseboard. Now I need a backsplash - do I continue to stay neutral so the cabinets are the star? or do I put up something that has more color? Would like to do subway tile husband is not crazy about glass tiles. Tastes are transitional with a leaning towards contemporary. Any ideas would be helpful.

Wow, anytime you want to trade kitchens, you just let me know, ok? I would say the only thing missing is a touch of color, you could consider a painted glass backsplash. They're beautiful, add just a touch of color and are so easy to clean: [houzz=

Ah but what color - that is the question.....
What are the colors in your adjoining rooms?
Dining room is the same color as the kitchen, the family room it opens into is a green on 3 walls and a chocolate color on the wall facing the kitchen with a stone fireplace

Your kitchen is very neutral, I would stay away from beige or brown to avoid the yawn factor. You could go with a pale green, green is supposed to be good in a kitchen for digestion. But I would much rather see a pop of color. Perhaps a light watery blue? If you want to go bold, red ocher is very delicious: [houzz=

] And it has just enough red in it to keep it from being boring. If you like it perhaps you could get a paint chip and hold it agains your floor. Everyone's monitor is going to be just a little off so this color on my monitor may not work with your floor.

So you are saying just paint for the backsplash or are you suggesting those colors for tile backspash?
Have the back of the glass painted for your backsplash. It's not expensive, there's no grout to deal with. Amy's colors are wonderful, too.
Oh I see what you mean. Not sure husband will go for that, but I did see that on one of the diy shows. It wouldn't be that hard to change either....
Are you doing this yourself or having it done? I ask because we just finished tling my husbands bathroom vanity top and backsplash. We chose a mini-mosaic glass and stone tile. Grouting the horizontal surfaces, no problem. Grouting the vertical surfaces, not sure I want to do that again in a hurry :)
I knkow what you mean! We did a bathroom a few years ago and I still have nightmares about it! We are doing it ourselves.
Well if you decide to go with the painted glass, have it cut to size first, and then have holes drilled into the corners so you can attach it without glue. Then have it professionally sprayed so there are no brush/roller marks. Good luck, and post pics later!
Thank you! I will do some before and afters. We still can't believe that this is our kitchen (or will be)
Amy, where did you see that tile? I sent picture to husband and he likes it.
I would go with a colorful decorative tile. The kitchen is beautiful but a little color would make it pop and give you the wow factor.
Excellent! And I think Amy's tile is a great choice.

Jilly666, decorative tile as in pattern?
A pattern in a glossy glass or go with the subway tile and put a decorative border in it. I just ordered a mosaic for my bathroom from a woman on etsy.com I did not have it installed yet. She could make whatever you want. Her company was called beaded glasswork. I could give you the link if you want.

Thanks as always Bobbi P! Janic you have a wonderful kitchen best of luck to you! Yes, and please share the finished photos, we'd love to see what you do :)

    Please do

Thank you Amy. I will put up more pics when the kitchen is finished. Thank you for the tile suggestion too

    http://www.etsy.com/listing/111512374/subway-mosaic-tile-install-for-bathroom

I am going with the New York City theme in my bathroom. She made me a replica of a subway sign for Penn Station. But she can make you anything you want. Her prices are very reasonable.

    Thank you

http://shorelychic.blogspot.com/2012/07/blue-glass-subway-tile.html I tried to find out eaxctly but couldn't see the source. I know I have seen it around at local dealers so I feel safe it will be fairly easy to find. They show larger ones here too that are nice for you as well. Good Luck!

janic. I know you are probably done with your tile. Mine was finally finished. Here is the pic. It is in the bathroom. For those of you that don't understand the connection. It is a copy of a subway sign found in the NYC subway.

Do the glass tiles with various colors. Pick a design that has a little bit of red to spice it up!!
Jilly666, that is cool. I'm not that bold : )
Beverlynn, have to appease husband too and no way with the red or multicolored. We are now thinking ocean mist glass subway with silver foil tile as an accent. We haven't quite figured it out yet but we are closer.

You could get anything you want made. What is the area next to your fridge? I think a pop of color in your kitchen would really make a statement. I always try to put one conversation piece in each room that shows my personality whether it is a piece of furniture, decoration or a funky paint color. Don't be shy!!!

What is it about the glass tile that the hubby doesn't like? Is it that they are shiny or something else? I've been out looking at glass tile over the last 2 days for a current client project and have been pleasantly surprised by some of the new textures available on glass tiles.
For this project we are leaning toward an elongated subway using 4" x12" in a soft clay color with a bright silver pencil bordering a strip of reddish glass/ceramic mixed mosaic. We will also use the mosaic as a focal point above the range

Glass tiles in a color that stands out or translucent or facades
  • 13 years ago
Sorry I gave the wrong impression, he does like glass tile but he doesn't like the "pop" of color thing. He would rather have everything cohesive and blend. Which I don't have a problem with, it's just these colors for whatever reason are not coming together in a way I like.
The area next to the fridge is a tall cabinet with a microwave on it, probably no tile there.
I've attached a newer photo with the countertops in.

Have you thought about a brushed aluminum tile for the backsplash? Tin ceiling tile replicas can be finessed into service there at modest cost. If you tack the tiles into place, it can be a treatment you can change, unlike other components of our kitchens. BTW, sometimes women get to overrule husband design choices...just saying.
HAHA Trust me, I've overruled quite a few things he's wanted in this kitchen. Tried the metal look and I'm not a fan. I looking for it to stay bright airy and friendly. I lived for 28 years with a dark and dreary kitchen and I don't want to go even remotely in that direction : )
And I really like the reflective surface that glass provides.
Beautiful kitchen. My two cents, choose something neutral and use accessories to bring color and your personality/style into your new kitchen. Then you don't have the pressure of picking something you have to love forever. I even have placed a hook over my stove to hang a seasonal tray or plate.
That's kinda what I was thinking. I don't want to get tile up there I had and then have to live with it. But I just have to find the right tile 1st. I want the tile to bring everything together not be a separate element in and of itself.
I put this up the other day but maybe it didn't get into this discussion.....We are DONE! 1st pic shows the before and then the rest are various angles of the kitchen. Would appreciate any comments - Thanks everybody for your suggestions.

Janic, I love, love, love your kitchen. Great choice on the backsplash! That color is perfect. Nice job and thank you for posting the finished product. I appreciate that.

We just finished building our home this fall. I wanted a pop of color in the backsplash, but didn't want it to take over the entire room - so we opted for large (18x24) white textured tiles with verticle green glass tiles in between. I really like how it turned out - modern, but I think it will last for a long while. You could do white subway tiles with 1 stripe of blue or green glass tiles in between every 3 rows of the subway tiles (horizontally instead of vertically like we did). Good luck - love your cabinets!!

vtlady51 - Thank You! We are really happy with it too. Was a little worried it might have been too blue but I think it turned out pretty well.
E Klo - Love what you did with your backsplash. Might have considered it if we had seen it before we were done : )
Sorry Janic.. just saw how old this post was. LOVE the new kitchen.. just scrolled down and saw the pictures. ;)
That's ok. I don't know how to change it or if I need to start a new one. Wish I could edit the original one and say scroll....
