August Greenhouse

Here's some pics of what's going on lately.

Maha Chanook from Thailand after a semi-pugging.

Brogdon avocado after a semi-pugging.

Multi grafted cherimoya. Probably 4 years old. Grafts are Pierce, Honey Hart, & El Bumpo.

Garcinia Livingstonei (Imbe). The two largest out of 4 plants. 3 of the 4 plants have put out male blooms. One of the larger plants is being stubborn. The large one that produced male blooms also produced a bloom with male and female parts.

These are the two smaller Imbe plants. Rather ratty looking compared to the others. Both of these are putting out male blooms. However....and this is a huge however... the plant on the left just recently put out a perfect female flower! Go figure.

Female Imbe flower. I have zero confidence that the flower has been pollinated.

Male Imbe flower.

Garcinia Laterifolia (Achachairu).

Grafted Achachairu from PR

Garcinia Madrunos (Madronos)

Garcina Edulis (Lemon Drop Mangosteen)

Garcinia Prainiana (Cherapu). Had another big one that was the twin to this one but lost it a few years ago. Big bummer. Picked up this smaller one in PR last year. Both have been putting out lots of growth lately.

Couple of mangosteen seedlings.

Gold Nugget jackfruit.

Yellow rambutan...grafted.

Pulasan seedlings and miscellaneous garcinia seedlings from last year's trip to PR.

Cacao. The one on the left had started putting out blooms.

Bell Carambola.

Sugar apple.

Namwah bananas.

Nam Doc Mai mango.

    Wow Jay,
your greenhouse has really started to fill in nicely and what a great collection too! Imbes are such beautiful looking plants, what size pots are they in? Congrats on the hermaphodite and female blooms (and male), fruit is next!

    nice 4 legged friend too,

    Hi Ohiojay,

Looks really good. Your Garcinia looks amazing. I wish I could grow my plants as well as you do.

How are you going to handle your fruits?

    Hi Jay,

Just wondering for my own reference, why do you have them in pots in the greenhouse? Why not put them into soil directly?

    thanks,

Snow.. Jay dont even see snow! Damn! You have quite the collection up there!! Your Maha looks a lot "Maha'y" then the one I was sent from Thailand for sure!
So you'll probably set a world record for fruiting a lot of that stuff that far north, no?
All in all its very inspiring to those who complain about the winter and cold protection!

Jay- your greenhouse is looking good as always. Did you get any fruit from your Nam doc mai yet? What happen to your sapodilla?

Jay - things looking pretty good...BUT....

weren't you the one with the moisture/water problems
    sneaking into your house?

Am I thinking of someone else? Or, did you handle that
    problem????

    Thanks all.

Ethan...Those containers are at least 24" across the top and probably just as deep. They are filled with roots. Imbe's have incredible root structures. Too bad a lot of other garcinias don't as well. I keep these pruned quite often. I pray that the larger remaining plant is completely female. I'll then be able to do some consolidating!

YT...I can only wish that someday I will have the problem of wondering what to do with all the fruit!!

Steve...I do have plants directly in the ground inside the GH. The big mango, dragon fruit, bananas, and jackfruit. For most...it is easier for me to care for the plants right now while in containers. Most plants in there are on probation. If they don't perform, if the fruit isn't great, if too big a pest magnet, then out they go. There will be more plants put in the ground later. I've just not determined which ones.

PJ...no records here. I believe there are other northerners that have had better luck fruiting stuff than me. I seem to be hooked on the more rare and harder to keep alive plants than good sense would allow. This leads to more failures than I would like. This was a year of a few firsts...first jackfruit and cacao blooms, first female blooms on an Imbe. It's difficult to be patient...when you have absolutely none! And was it necessary to mention snow?

Ch3rri...The nam doc mai has fruited. It actually fruited more when it was first in a container. It has been pitiful since putting in the ground inside the GH. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong...watering, pruning, or more to cause such a poor performance. A plant this size should put out more mangos than we could eat. I'm not quite warming up the chain saw yet but that thought is always in the back of my mind. I know when a container plant is in need of water. It's tough to judge this one. My sapodilla??? Now here is a prime example of a non-performer getting it's ass ripped out of the ground!! A very very beautiful plant. Grew like a weed and always had a nice shape. Would only put out a few blooms and each of those would always drop. After about 5 years of this crap, I went Rambo on it.

Mangodog...moisture/water issues??? Me? My well constructed GH?? I can't believe that you wo...yeah...that was me. Depends on how you want "handled" used in a reply. As for the actual repairs, yes, those issues were handled either by contractors replacing sections of my home or by me using that Permaflex water proofing product in and on nearly every surface in the GH. Do I feel confident with the repairs? Probably never will at least until I move out or burn the f'ing thing down. I would soooo love to have a "do over" with the GH construction. The manufacturer of the GH did me no favors by their design either. So many things I would now do differently. I've done what I can do and hope there are no further issues. The only project related to this mess that has to still be done is removing the sliding door frame and replacing the redwood sill plate with plastic lumber. I'm still working up the intestinal fortitude to begin this. I'm afraid it is not going to be as simple as it sounds.

For a mental answer? Hell no. I did not handle this very well. This nearly broke the mental bank reducing me to a jabbering idiot. If the jackfruit branches had been a little bigger near the top, I may have tried to hang myself from it! It seemed that everytime I turned around or completed one repair, I found a new issue or had to redo something already fixed. The straw that nearly crushed the camel was when I was messing around with one of the side supports of the structure and the drill bit slipped off. The spinning bit went right between the support and glass. The next thing I know, the inner pane of glass went pop! Spider webbed the entire pane. And you know what? I stared at that damn thing for 10 minutes and it still didn't go away like it didn't happen. The only positive thing about it was that it was a pane in the very back up against the house.

So if anyone out there ever considers a GH, please learn from my mistakes!! Gotta go...therapy appointment!

Thanks for posting Jay. I am always in awe of how well you guys up north do with the limit spacing and generaal GH issues. Your PR seedlings look better than mine. I tried to harden mine a bit too much with exposure to cold this past winter. And, while I didn't kill all my rambutan and pulasan like some people did, (I don't want to mention any names but his name begins with SH), mine look pretty damned rough. Your larger achachairu looks to be about ready put out a bloom or two......well one can hope can't one. Again, thanks for posting.

Oh Jay, I'm sorry to bring up the moisture issues, as the whole post was about you showing off your excellent plants to us. Sounds like it IS something you gotta get beyond before you can truly enjoy plants again.

My real estate investment portfolio kinda followed your greenhouse adventure - yeah, wish I could do it over again too....these days, just tryin to crawl from the poor house back to the dog house....

    Jay,
    Nice pics. I'm almost impressed.

    Harry,
I didn't kill my rambutan and pulasan. They just fruited so much they killed themselves.

    Jay,

Love the pictures! Really admire what you doing with growing in a greenhouse using containers. Sorry to hear about all your troubles with the greenhouse.

Btw, what type of fertilizer and schedule do you use?

Wow Jay, I wish I could get all of my stuff to look half as good as your plants.
