Hey guys! Just received another package in the mail yesterday, and we're already over 400 seed packs! Lots of interesting seeds - including a large number of unique heirloom tomato varieties. If there are any specific types you're interested in, please post them and I can check if I've gotten any.

becki25msmolly - I think someone already set the tomatoes aside for me, but I would love some of the castor bean seeds. I grew a red type called Impala this year which I really like, but they've only grown to about 4 feet. I'll set aside the seeds you requested.

leilahamaya - I'll set aside the delicata squash and the peas. I believe that sugar maple are technically hardy through zone 8, but I think that they do better in a zone that experiences a hard freeze. I'm definitely not an expert on this, so I could be wrong. You're more than welcome to try them if you'd like. The honey locust are definitely hardy in your zone, but I've heard that they can sucker excessively and be quite invasive in the warmer zones.

heavenlyfarm - I'll set aside the corn and onion for you. And you definitely won't get any of your own packs back in the return package. After I've set aside the requested seeds, I'll look over wish lists and match up any that I can. Then, any leftover seeds will be divided up randomly so that each person gets at least the amount that they sent in, but likely will receive more than that number.

crazyfarmgirl14 - I'll set aside the peas for you.

ooo thanks.

i actually would like to try some sugar maples, please =) you dont have to send a lot , thanks thats awesome. i really like starting trees from seed. if it makes it great, if it doesnt o well....thats kinda how you have to be when starting tree seeds....

but i am all set with locust. we have those all over here, actually i think its the black locusts that are all over the place with those bean pod seeds.

Erica - one of the idig swappers is sending in Moldovan Green Tomato, so I asked them to set that aside for you.

midwestfarmwife - I set aside Bradley Tomato seeds for you since they were on your wishlist.

pmb2005 - I set aside a pack of Brandywine Sudduth Strain Tomato seeds for you since they were on your wishlist.

A few other interesting varieties that have come in are: BKX (Black Krim Potato Leaf), Brandywine Sudduth's Strain, Cherokee Green, Dr. Dester, Dr. Lyle, Hillbilly, Indigo Rose, Joe Lauerer's Pink German Egg, Lucky Cross, Margaret Curtain, Neves Azorean Red, Pineapple, Rio Grande, Russian 117, Rutgers. A few of these varieties were sent in as bonuses, so the packs might have fewer seeds or be from 2011 or something like that. The majority of these are regular packs though (one pack available of each variety except Joe Lauerer's - 4 and Rutgers - 2).

leilahamaya - Sounds good. I'll set the maple seeds aside for you. We usually winter sow those, so I would highly recommend a cold strat in the fridge.

Michael - if you still have some Mealy Cup Sage available, could you set it aside for me? I have some seed that I saved from a bouquet that I got at the farmers market a couple of weeks ago, but I don't know if it was fully mature or not. If it's all spoken for already, no big deal. Thanks!

@garrett
you know- i just dont know if they can cross. ???

i had been assuming they couldnt because they are different species, i had assumed sweet cherry can cross with sweet cherry, and black cherry can only cross with other black cherries, but now that you point that out i am just not sure. the royal ann cherry tree would possibly cross with the other red sweet cherry pictured behind the black cherry, but i had the idea that black cherry is so particular ( as well as very old, stable and not hybridized being a native feral tree) and different than the sweet cherry species that it should remain true to type. stone fruits in general are usually true to type, or at least very close to the parent.cherries can be a bit weirder than the rest (peaches and apricots produce true to type usually) but some cherry species reverts back to its wild cherry ancestors sometimes. this is a wild cherry, so it has nothing to revert back to =)

and here, is a picture of the red sweet cherry too, i took a picture of that one as well as the new gardens i am putting in and working on slowly (before pics!) yesterday.
here, if you feel like browsing some more pictures:
http://s896.photobucket.com/user/leilahamaya/library/happy%20garden
anyway this other cherry tree is still going along but its having some bad insect problems. while the black cherry is completely unaffected by it. we have a dozen or more sedling trees of varying years of age from both this sweet red cherry and the royal ann cherry. none of those are in fruit yet though. they are probably crosses of the two sweet cherry, though some should be more like the red cherry, and some that came from the roayal ann should have the golden tones of the cherries like the royal ann.

----->>>>Thank You Leila! I saved it to my laptop. Pretty cool to have a picture of the parent tree! With how close they are, I wonder if they could have crossed? Who knows, 1 out of 15 per chance? Hey, now can you get a picture of the other one? Hee hee, that's a joke! I really am kidding about that. That is a very healthy looking tree too. I really do appreciate you taking the time to take a pic!!! Thanks very much!

Thanks for holding the tomato for me Bumblebee23! I do understand that that's if they have more. The timing was very strange. Weird too, that that Erica girl was involved, ROFL!!!

Leila, Thanks for the picture. I was kidding about it. But it's a plus for sure! And I responded to your email. Thanks. The garden pictures are looking awesome. Something else to consider at this point in time is to "Bury" some leaf type lettuces (which have broken down some - rotted in other words) and other fruits too - not citrus like pinneapple. But make sure they have broken down a bit before. Bury them atleast 5 - 6 inches deep. Worms love it! And they do lots of wonderful work for you. The cardboard boxes is something else they love for bedding. Even breaking some of it down as much as you can and burying it near the food - probably under it (shredded). I started a worm bin with Red Wigglers about 5 months ago. Started with approximately 60 of them. Now, I have 1,000 + worms! Ground down eggshells will cause them to multiply quickly. Eggshells need to be baked in the oven till their dry. Then shred em up or crumble them as fine as you can. You can throw them in with the food as well as used coffee grounds and tea bags. Then cover it all back over with the cardboard. A side note that I learned - Sevin Dust will kill up to a 100% of worms in the garden. That's why I stay away from pest killers. And why I'm trying to get Marigolds in my garden, lol. That was alot of work going hunting after the bugs! I have a spot I was trying this on outside and noticed how the dirt (was red clay) is a rich brown color. And many native worms! So under that cardboard you'd have a very nice micro climate and worms working the dirt for you. After they eat... they go back downward to the shredded cardboard leaving one of the best fertilizers you can get readily available for the plants to take in through their roots. Red Wigglers have been proven to work more that the average worm so adding a few wouldn't hurt. This is what I'm going to do for next year.

Thank you Leila!

Midwestfarmwife, you need to pick some more from my list. I need to fill your bag up. It's only got one thing in it. You've got 5 things down for me. So... get busy! Haha!

Garret - Do you want some of my Orange Hawaii Marigolds? They are great to grow in with your tomatoes, because they are actually a tall marigold. Mine got about 2ft tall.

yes i use a sheet mulch with cardboard under the garden beds. that new bed i am just building up, is all sheet mulched underneath the first layers of wood chips/straw/and screened soil.
its still got a long way to go though...but at least got the cardboard down and the few few layers of covering. now i am going to build a hugelculture bed with large pieces of wood on top of it.
