Cute sign. Now you'll get only the stinky stuff; no personal papers. (Be careful pawing through this. You don't want to get stuck/infected.) My guess is this came from someone working in your area -- maybe working on your house?

I hadn't called the police until you suggested it. The county said they hadn't considered 'theft of services' but that it made sense. The tresspassing thing certainly applies too. It's really not to the level of involving the police officially, but I want to be clear on my threats and not be threatening things that can't happen. It may very well be the contractors, but I believe they are from Indy, and the address is about 60 miles from there. Who knows. Also, only female names on the stuff.

I really think showing the papers will be a big deterrant. Maybe I'll include an article about identity theft. Heh.

You went through a bag of used panty liners and then took documents from that bag and put them in a fax machine? I hope you are the only one who uses that fax machine.

If your goal is to make the people working on your house think you are crazy and unreasonable and therefore make them inclined to disregard your complaints and suggestions then definitely post that sign. Otherwise just post a sign that says "No Dumping".

Personally, I would not post that sign. While you have a very good point, it may only serve to make some people mad who might do real damage. If the dumpster user is working at your house, they could do something as simple as careless work on your house or something much more malicious that isn't detected until much later. During my build, I had kids drinking in my open garage on the weekend. I put up a no trespassing sign, but then ripped it down and tore it into tiny pieces. I learned from dad (my builder) that these things just antagonize people and don't really solve anything. Also, I agree with the previous poster .... do you really want to go through someone's garbage? Just something to think about.

We built in a gated community with a guard at the gate 24/7, average home price over $1 million. Our dumpster got filled with LOTS of "unauthorized" stuff, even after I put warning signs on it...in English and Spanish. We regularly found bags of lawn clippings, etc., undoubtedly from the gardeners. But a side-by-side refrigerator??? Amazing!

I finally did what hoosierdoc did and sorted through several bags, finding lots of financial statements including SSN and other info perfect for identity theft. It was from a neighbor down the street who was moving and taking the opportunity to clean house. I called and politely asked that they come down and retrieve their trash from my dumpster. The woman was very embarrassed and said her son must have disposed of it there rather than leaving it out for the garbage truck...yeah, right.

Disposal represents a significant cost in your build. You shouldn't have to put up with that sort of thing.

In some states (Ohio I if I recall) it's covered by the littering statutes. Once when I ran the datacom for the state university, I got a call from the police. It seems that someone had discarded wiring spools with my info on it in someone else's garbage. Turns out that my contractor did it (his landlord at the office said that the dumpster behind the building was OK to use, it wasn't, it belonged to the property next door).

I feel your pain but I am not so sure on the sign. We also had teenagers partying every weekend. Every Monday the No Trespassing signs where knocked down and the porta potty was knocked over. It seems the signs just ticked them off even more. So, we put up cameras! Hidden and in plain site. We saw more neighbors looking in our house then I had ever dreamed! LOL! The workers use to always ask me if the cameras where real and I said YES THEY ARE! We really lucked out with not having anything stolen during our build. Matter of fact we have a huge pile of sandstone sitting in the front still and I am shocked no one has taken any because we do not have our fence up yet. Maybe I should erase that....it will be gone tomorrow when I get home just watch! :-)

Honestly though, some cameras where dummies but three were live, two with sound. It was worth the investment....esp to hear the builder complain on the tapes! That was fun! He didn't ever see the two live cameras until we pointed them out! The third was hidden, we never showed it to anyone.

Good luck. Becareful going through the trash though. You never know what people throw away :-(

Where did you purchase the cameras?

One is a game camera. It is motion activated. I like it because it blends in with the trees and if you didn't know it was there you would never see! DH bought it at Cabala's

The other camera's I believe DH bought them at Fry's electronics. They are not motion activated. They run on a loop . I am not sure how long the loop runs for but DH has it being recorded. I think if you do not down load it, it will record over it.

In my neighborhood if you post that sign telling them not to put stuff in the dumpster they will simply toss it on the lawn as they drive away.

cigarettes, run up credit cards, and lottery tickets...

I live in a condo complex- San Antonio Texas. Our dumpsters were so full of other people's trash that we couldn't put our own in! We have 7 large dumpsters. Obviously, a lawn service was using it, for one. Our condo association had to get 2 more dumpsters- each one is $100 a week. One night, I saw two trucks pull up they put about 10 bags in each dumpster- didn't want to make it too obvious I guess- yeah, sure... I got the license plates, called the police, as here this is a serious offense. Both owners of the two trucks got fined $2,000.00!! You just wouldn't believe how many ways there are to steal from others. I'd say go get 'em! And put up cameras- you want to know who it is if there is retaliation! Make sure you put a camera angled so it will pick up a license plate pulled up by the dumpster!
