Bluestar gas smell

About every 2nd or 3rd time I use the oven I get a wicked gas smell well into the preheat stage. Not the initial ignition smell, which I'm very familiar with, but a pure gas smell 5-10 minutes into preheat. But, it's very inconsistent as sometimes it doesn't do it at all. This is the part that confuses me some. Any suggestions before I call a service guy?

    Natural gas.

It's the curse of the pro-style range! Samr warned us :-)

If you were curious, you could remove the racks and the oven floor and watch the ignition and the 5-10 minutes of pre-heat.

Since it uses electricity to light it, perhaps there is a problem with the glow-plug.. although this wouldn't make a difference until the thermostat had cycled the gas back off and then on. Or perhaps the thermopile is letting the gas on a second or two before the glow plug is hot enough to ignite it, and you don't smell it until it escapes from the oven cavity.

You could have a leak somewhere that sometimes allows the gas to burn off.

I had a failing igniter in an old range and although gas shouldn't flow until the igniter is hot enough to ignite the gas, I could see a marginal one causing some gas leakage. At any rate it's not worth playing around with.

Keitel, has this been resolved? I have a BS range on order and am getting very nervous about the service issues.

I haven't used the oven too many times since posting and when I have there has been no gas smell. I spoke to the local service guy (who's been working on gas and Garlands for over 30 years) and from what I told him he knew what it was. The top surface burner is igniting too slowly or something so unlit gas is escaping, but only very intermittently. He's going to fix it for me but he has to go through certain steps with Bluestar now which is something he's not used to. He usually just goes and fixes things, but he said that Bluestar is trying to be perfectly consistent and make sure every service company reports and does the same thing. Makes sense to me.

I wouldn't be nervous about the service issues at all. This service guy, for example, had never laid eyes on a Bluestar before showing up to my house to install it. He immediatly recognized it as a Garland and felt totally comfortable working on it. He was also able to diagnose it over the phone simply because it's a basice gas range and therefore experience and skill can be relied upon rather than complicated electronics and technical manuals. Just my 2 cents.

Hey everyone. Thought I'd update the situation. Had a service call yesterday and it turns out that the air mixture on the main oven burner was off so that the left side of the burner was lighting well after the right, thus releasing a lot of gas. The tech. backed off the air in the mixture and now the left lights about a half a second after the right and no more gas smell.

I also had him adjust my convection fan which was getting really noisy. Once in a while it would be very loud until I nudged the front of the range or moved it a bit and it would stop. It had 2 loose screws mounting it to the back of the oven wall so hopefully that'll take care of that.

I've been using my Bluestar for about a month. The left side front and back burners are not clicking. I contacted the help line and asked them to send me the ignitors. Would this fix the proble?

wokwithme, Bluestar now offers the white glove service in Ontario but not the rest of Canada. Were you able to use this service at all before having problems?

FWIW you can also call the gas company and tell them you smell gas. In California they will come right over. I had an air/gas ratio mixture problem that the gas company fixed for me for free (after paying for multiple service calls).

The technician came today to replace the ignitor electronic module. It works great after the replacement.
The original part that was in the stove was made for the 6 burner range, my is a 4 burner range. so, hopefully i wont have any more igniting problem with my new BS gas range.
    wokwithme!
