Grilling/BBQ porch?

I'm wondering if anyone has a BBQ area, on their porch? Something screened, but safe, so maybe built-in with exhaust hood? I would like to have a place to BBQ (maybe with small sink) that is away from bugs, barn kitties and other unwanted helpers.

Yes my BBQ cooker is on my porch but it is not screened and it is not very enclosed. (open on three sides) And I use propane.

Oh that sounds like a nice idea.

We have a screened porch and we sometimes use with our little charcoal hibachi grill out there but our big grill (when we ever finally get around to buying one) is going to have to go out on the unscreened patio. That's where we put the propane outlet for it and the screened porch is too small anyway.

The hibachi is small enough that the little bit of smoke it puts out is dissipated well enough by breezes through the porch screens. With a bigger grill, even if we had room enough AND propane available on the screened porch, I'd probably feel like we needed an exhaust hood of some sort.

But you're right that mosquitoes and other pests take a lot of the fun out of outdoor grilling. Something tells me that DH and I will continue to use the hibachi whenever we're just cooking for the two of us.

Like Chris's, our gas grill is not screened and not very enclosed. The porch it is on is open on two sides.

That porch has an outdoor fan as we sit outside plenty, so bugs and smoke just get blown away.

We currently have a long porch -- uncovered -- upon which we do lots of BBQing. I personally don't share the fascination for screened porches; rather, we run a ceiling fan and burn candles to keep away the bugs.

In our new house, we plan another large covered porch. Details I'm considering:

    - A built-in cabinet /shelf that'll hold the grill and provide work space /buffet space. I'm thinking it should have a low spot where a cooler can be place (low so we can reach into it easily). We are not going so far as to include an outdoor sink, etc. We don't want to spend quite that much money.

    - The cabinet /shelf'll have a bar and barstools backing up to the pool so that people can sit and watch the chef cooking. And we'll have plenty of other seating under the covered roof.

    - I was kicking around the idea of a pass-through from the kitchen to outside, and I think I would've liked it, but it isn't working out with our grand plan, and it wasn't a gotta-have item anyway.

Ours is on a covered porch, away from the house, open on 3 sides. We don't have a hood. We will most likely an outdoor kitchen in a few years and will think about a hood at that time.

Oh, wait . . . I spoke incorrectly. My current porch, which I do enjoy is covered but not screened. Everything else I said was true.

We have a covered but not-screened porch with our propane BBQ on it. Love it. BBQ sits on the steel railing side so no melting the siding off the house ; )

We *did* do the pass-thru to the kitchen, and I LOVE it. Means not taking shoes off (or tracking dirt through house), and it's right over the sink so dirty dishes just get dumped. Really glad we did it! He cooks, I prep and plate.

We also have the overhead fans to keep the bugs at bay, and well, we eat inside, so it's not so bad.

Where's the challenge in grilling on a porch? The whole idea is to fight the elements, feed the skeeters, and roast meat over a conflagration big enough to be seen from the International Space Station!

Actually, I'm planning an outdoor kitchen under a tallish gazebo, but I probably won't screen it. I'm going to have a well-vented cupola, as I do a lot of smoking. I'm a bit squeamish about grilling on a porch that's attached to the house.

Awnmyown, please share a picture or two of your pass through. It is something we are looking at adding.

There are fire codes that will need to be satisfied to do this safely. Even cabinets under roof in an exterior situation need to be built of weather resistant materials. That generally means stainless, or marine grade products. Ventilation needs are more extreme than in a house because there's a LOT more smoke that doesn't drift away in the open breeze when captured by a roof. That translates to more expensive.

It can be done of course, but you're basically doing a complete second kitchen in more expensive materials. I'm working on a 10Kft2 house right now that has put their outdoor kitchen on the back burner because of the added expense. It was 20K, just to do something basic in materials that would last the weather. Yeah, that included a sink and a fridge, but you might subtract 6K from that 20 for that. Plus subtract a heck of a lot of convenience. If you're going to create an outdoor kitchen, it needs to have all of the parts that make it work well. Otherwise, just do a plain screened porch with the grill outside the porch and traipse in and out of the kitchen to cook there. It's still what millions do every summer!

2000 CFM of smoke mitigation! At least there's no need for makeup air outside. :) But, it's not even made from 304 steel. And the steel is thin. It only weights 107 pounds. And the motors are Chinese. As is everything. It might get you through a few years, but it won't last you like you'd really need it to last if you're going to be spending that much money.

So, covered is okay...screened more of a challenge? That makes sense. Maybe I can add a grill in the kitchen, for everyday. it would probably be cheaper! LOL
