Advice on painting dining room set

After filtering through all the great ideas here, I'm ready to start my fresh change with baby steps. I've never painted furniture before, so I need advice on color, type of paint and best tools to use to paint my dining room set. I'd like to go black, and reupholster in a something light. Or should I go opposite with light paint and darker fabric? My plan is to change the drapes to something less heavy and fresh.

FYI- the pictures make the furniture look almost black already, but it's more of a blue/forest green

To make it easy on yourself, prep wise, you might check out rustoleumtransformations.com. I hear the new product works well and in steps that require less prep than usual. Those chair backs are going to test your nerves unless you rent a fine mist spray painter.

Remove the seats and do yourself a giant favor - take a chair to a wood working shop and get a quote for spraying. I consider myself to be an experienced painter and I promise you, these are a challenge to paint well and look professionally done.

decoenthusiaste suggestion is good. I've done many pieces of furniture. The finish is all in the prep work, sand and clean the product well, apply the paint in thin coats a apply several coats of clear coat. Water base clear coats are good but you need 2-3 coats. I use Deft, a lacquer products and apply it in 2 coats.
