We are in the San Francisco Bay Area.
We are working on an addition project on our home and need to decide if we should add a detached 1 car Garage or a carport.

Garage will surely cost more (need help on how much) but provides more storage, and more usable area (ping pong, pool or garage band perhaps:)
But a carport will allow more lights for the adjacent rooms and cost less. storage wise we could put a shed in the back yard.
most ppl park their cars outside even they have 2 car garage in my neighborhood, because houses are typically small with limited storage.

so we couldn't make up our mind and need your help

1. how much does a garage cost
2. how much does a carport cost?
3. How much could we save now if we do the following?
Do all the difficult ground work required for garage first (foundation, post, electric, etc), and put a carport for now.
If Later on we decide to go with garage, we can enclose it and upgrade
