Just in case anyone is following this: I opened up the service panel & verified that there's no blockage downstream of the Askoll pump. Upstream of the pump looked pretty good too -- just a quarter, two dimes, and a penny in the coin trap, probably not enough change to be too much of a problem. So I'm thinking it's the pump. When looking carefully at the pump, I noticed that on the intake side of the pump there's a thin wire, probably copper, that goes into the pump. It's about the thickness of a bobby pin. It does clear the propellor vanes of the pump, but it's not completely obvious to me that this wire should be there. I'm tempted to try to yank it out but I wonder whether it's supposed to be there. Anybody have a good memory for the upstream side of this pump?

It's a Kenmore, 417.42142100. I have the docs that came with the washer, so it's possible that the electrolux ftp site won't help me if it just has the same docs (e.g., repairs parts list, etc.).

I did pull out the small metal object from the pump, and ran another supervised load. Now the buzzing noise is gone, but the machine still overfills in wash and rinse cycles, requiring me to manually shut off the water supply in over to avoid an overflow. So now I have to figure out if the problem is the intake, the pressure switch, or a blockage in the line connected to the pressure switch -- I've seen posts for other machines on how to tell how to do this. I do know that the machine can close the valve that lets water in, so it's likely to be one of the latter two possibilities.
