Beware Lowe's Appliance Sales

After much research, I decided on a Fisher Paykel washer (WL26CW2) and dryer (DE27CW1) pair. The local appliance store had a good price, but it wasn't in stock. Lowe's offered it at full msrp and had 2 sets in stock, the display and a boxed set. They wouldn't price match the other store, but did agree to discount it 10%, making it just a little more than at the other store. My old pair is dead, so I plunked down the $ for it yesterday, for delivery this morning. This is when things started getting FUN!

My "morning" delivery ended up being at 1:45 this afternoon...

The dryer top was dirty - not dusty, but had almost a film on top of it... the delivery guy said it was from the inside of his truck.

They installed the dryer, and called me in, saying there was a problem - the door latch was broken. They thought Lowe's would replace the lid... ummm, no, that's not accepable! I told them to call the store manager, if they took 20% off the price I would accept a repair, otherwise they could sell me another pair at a really great price. They wouldn't do the 20% so I refused delivery, arranged to meet the manager at the appliance section after I picked up kids. Did some very quick research on the Bosch pair (it was my second choice).

Got to Lowe's - went back to the appliance section, and there was a BIG, GAPING hole where the floor model pair had been! They had brought the floor models! I was livid... didn't pay for floor models, I had paid for an in box set! Grrr, apparently they "couldn't find" the boxed set so just brought those, not expecting me to figure that out. As I fumed, the manager sent someone out to the storage area to see if he could find the boxes... they found them and now they'll be delivered in the morning, or so they say.

Hopefully, I will have a great new washer and dryer tomorrow!

BTW - while they were "looking" for the box set, the manager offered me the floor model pair for $650 each. At that point I was definitely considering taking him up on his offer and wait for the new dryer lid. These are $898 and $859 each normally.

I have a headache from this! I am going to write a letter to Lowe's corporate, as I was deliberately misled. I am still fuming! Smells like a classic bait and switch operation to me.

Maybe you'd be better off buying from the local appliance store and wait for it to come in? I don't really see it as bait and switch since they didn't really try to dissuade you from one to upsell to a higher priced one. It was fraud. They sold you new and delivered floor (used) models. Common in the Big Box places. Much less common in the mom-n-pop stores.

Some people have had good dealings with Lowe's. Of course that will vary from store to store and even from day to day with the managerial changes that Lowe's has. A friend used to work for them and still works in Lowe's for another company. I hear lots of stories about the big L operation. Never been into one. Don't plan to either.

Unfortunately, my situation wouldn't allow me to wait another 3 weeks+several days for the local store's supplier to get it, deliver it to them, and the store to deliver it to me. I've already been without a washer/dryer for a week, and laundry is piling up!

I just ordered the same pair, and I am waiting for them to be delivered. Let me know how you like them when you finally get them in!

Got them today - their "first of the day" delivery was 11 am!

I've washed about 4 loads already - having fun!

Still looking for a "quick wash" option. I also use downy in most of my laundry, so had to reset the defaults so it will be dispensed. I think I will switch to vinegar for rinsing after the downy is gone this time. Using Tide HE liquid for now. So far, so good!

Jen - be sure you get a "new" pair! I have to say, I think the top of my head came off when I saw that empty spot in the store. Of course, my money-saving inner self was enthused by the manager's offer of the floor model pair for $650 each - but I am much happier with the new pair!

Thanks for the update- I am glad you like them so far. What about the dryer? I loved the idea of a top loader dryer. Does it work well when moving the clothes? My old dryer was on it's last leg, and I am looking forward to clothes that are actually dry when you remove them.

I would have had the same reaction if I had gone back to the store- that is unforgivable.

I like the dryer - but it is very deep! I'm also learning to be patient while it turns the drum back over and unlocks. It's a learning curve! I love the extra space I end up with in the laundry room... the other thing I didn't think of when I was considering it is the folding space - I used the dryer top to stack folded things until I put them away - but less clutter is a good thing, too!

I bought (and returned) a Whirlpool Duet 9200 from Lowe's three months ago, and it was singularly the worst buying experience I've ever encountered with any store. It may be however that the particular Lowe's we bought from(in Sunnyvale, CA) was just poorly managed and other locations may be better.

    - For one, the delivery people were truly incompetent. They had already unpacked the washer at the store and had thrown away everything (including the warranty card and free sample of Affresh). They then forgot to tighten the leg nuts, causing our Duet to vibrate severely during spin cycles.

    - Calling the store is always a nightmare. Getting ahold of the delivery manager (who barely spoke English) to complain took over 15 minutes. They would just keep transferring me from person to person, and sometimes would just hang up. They would not let me speak to a manager.

    - We saw a Duet 9400 on sale at a local appliance store for the same price that we had bought our 9200 from Lowe's, so we decided to return our 9200. Of course, over a month later, we realize that Lowe's never refunded our credit card, though they gladly charged us $80 to pick-up the washer and take it back to the store. I had to trundle over to the store again and they couldn't find any record of our purchase in their computers even with a copy of the receipt. Finally after 15 minutes the customer service lady gave up and just refunded us the money.

I'm much happier with the Duet 9400 from our local appliance store and wished I had gone there first instead of the big-box stores. The prices for the same model were about $300 less, the delivery people actually followed instructions and didn't throw away everything, and I feel that if I ever have a problem and call the store, I'll be able to speak to someone who cares in less than a minute.

Sent a letter to Lowe's corporate - called the district manager to let him know the situation - the manager called me, apologized for the mistakes, and offered an extra 10% off the cost, plus refunded delivery. Worked out that they price matched to the local store + took another 10% off. I've done too much research and decided on this pair, so accepted their offer instead of going with another set at a different store.

...so accepted their offer instead of going with another set at a different store.I don't believe that you can get much better than that! Congratulations.

I'm glad I read this. I purchased a washer at Lowe's and when they delivered the next day I noticed that the pedestal was a bit scuffed on one side. Also there seemed to be some dust on the machine. I asked if this was the floor model and the delivery guy said yes. I called the store and the salesman told me that they "couldn't find the one that was supposed to be in the back, so decided to send the floor model." I told him that I didn't pay for the floor model and didn't want it. He said, "oh, it's fine...never even been plugged in." I asked him how many kids had been swinging on the door? He didn't get it. I sent it back, got a refund, went somewhere else and got a better deal. Lowe's apologized for "the confusion" but never for being deceitful. Had they been up front initially and called to tell me the situation and offered to send the floor model at a discount, I would have considered that. But what they did was simply dishonest. I will not buy from them again.

I have to believe that experience with Lowe's specifically is strictly local. I've purchased F&P dish drawers and GE washer and dryer (F&P stuff in disguise). Always the service was excellent! The sales people were very knowledgeable and didn't pressure. The delivery guys were ... well, good delivery guys. However, I live in a semi-small seaside community and that changes everything! Even the box stores can't get away with shoddy when it's a small town. I've moved here from a large, southern city and service up there stunk!

I recently bought a Whirlpool dryer from Lowes. When the delivery people showed up I met them at the driveway. I intended to watch them closely on how they handled my new machine. I saw them sliding the boxed machine to the back of the truck, glanced away for a second and the next thing I see is them lifting the box off the machine. There was no way they had enough time to cut the box. When they started to dolly the machine to the house I asked them if they had cut the box. They said no, they had done it at the store so they can check for any damage before delivering to the customer. Hmmmm. That made me a little uncomfortable. They said they do that with all the major appliances they deliver. This sure does open up the possibility of getting a floor model, then Lowes puts a new one on the floor and uses its box for the one to be delivered. In my case though, the dryer I bought was a gas dryer and those are not put on display. But in any case, I don't like their reasoning for not delivering a machine in an unopened box and will not buy another major appliance from Lowes ever again. No other major appliance dealer I have bought from in the past does this questionable practice.

The delivery people didn't even have an appliance dolly, which made transporting the dryer to my basement laundry room far more difficult than it should have been.
Their rebate for delivery is actually a Lowes gift card which took over 6 weeks to get.
Sears has an actual cash rebate for delivery and took only 2 weeks.

There is no benefit to to Lowe's in removing an item from the floor, putting a new item in its place, and then repackaging the floor model in the box from the item they just put on the floor.

When I worked for a different big box store a few years ago, they would routinely unbox and inspect appliances at the store before loading up for delivery. This way, they could call the customer and let them know if an item was damaged, and what the options were. It saved a lot of time in the long run.

If, after opening the box at the customer's home, damage was found, couldn't the customer talk to the manager by phone and see what options there were? Or is it preferable for the big box stores to have the customer come to the store to view the damage, then discuss options. Certainly not a time saver for the customer.

I have had excellent service from Lowes..Never ever a problem getting things straightened out..Even exchanged things when I did not like something.

The reason to make the call from the store is to describe the damage to the customer in advance, maybe offer a discount or something if they are willing to accept it. If the customer has no interest in a damaged product regardless of discount, then time will have been saved. A new unit can be ordered and the delivery rescheduled. If they just haul it out to the customer, pop open the box and realize the unit is damaged, and the customer will not accept it under any circumstance, then it was a wasted trip.

Also, each minute that truck is moving is money spent. If a delivery charge was collected, that only helps to offset the costs involved. The delivery operations cost money (when you calculate labor for two guys, fuel, vehicle wear/tear), and no profit is made by the collection of delivery charges. So when you have a circumstance where an additional trip has to be made (after the damage was discovered at the home), immediately it is a loser, especially if it was on something like a $700 laundry pair. Or just a lone washing machine.

I don't think Lowe's would be opening a new appliance, putting it on the floor, and then using the "new" box for the "old" floor model because boxes usually ALWAYS have stickers on them with a serial number that matches the serial number of the machine inside the box. I worked as a packer in an appliance plant and as these appliances come off the assembly line and "stickered", duplicate stickers of the serial # (not just the MODEL #) are printed for affixing to the box it is finally packed in.

Also, a local appliance store here ALWAYS opens the items in store before delivery to check for damage--saves time & money like another poster said--much better than having to drive back to store for another item if damage is found at home of delivery.

I bought a washer and dryer back in July 2017. but because completing my house was delayed they were finally delivered in January 2018. Immediately there were problems. On delivery the dryer had a long scratch on the side. After each washer, only three, the dispenser cups were full to the tops with water and the fabric softener. Maytag authorized technician came out, realized parts were missing and the fact that I told him he dispenser cups where dirty upon delivery. He checked with Maytag and found that the washer and dryer were used. Store promptly took them back and said they would do an even exchange for "NEW" ones to be delivered. Today I went in to complete that transaction. It took 2 hours. When I got home I found that Lowes refunded me $209 less than what I originally paid. Now trying to correct this problem too. So, YES Lowes does sell USED appliances as NEW.

I would be very disappointed with that experience but I have to say Ihad a very good experience with an appliance order from Lowe's in July.

I am leaning towards getting the next appliance from them as well. I also, for what its worth, have noticed that appliance sale prices are real and they really do go back up when the sale is over. (there is always something on sale, but if you want a particular model....). I use their card so it's always a further 5% discount.

Sheilaaus122, your experience does not negate mine and in no way is a comparison. Most everyone knows how sales work and that prices return to a higher amount afterwards. Lowe's delivered used appliances instead of the new I purchased.. Example, If you purchased a new car and they delivered a used one, I'm sure you would demand a new one at the price you negotiated and paid, not pay several thousand more above what you've already paid. Lowe's insisted I take an even exchange which would be at the original purchase price for all the appliances and equipment because it wasn't my fault they had to be returned. I hadn't changed my mind and decided I didn't want them. It wasn't a voluntary return. Obviously if I had changed my mind and just decided to return them, I nor anyone else, would think they could get a sale price at a later date when no sale existed. I wanted my appliances so much that despite the many months of waiting to have my home completed and them delivered I didn't cancel my order. I knew if I did at a later date I wouldn't get the same sale price unless a sale was on. I will not be penalised for Lowe's careless actions. All I'm asking for is Lowe's to honour their agreement to replace the appliances with an even exchange at the original purchase price. The same as no one would except a car dealer switching a used car for a new one and then expecting you to pay thousands more just to get what you already paid. Most would call that a scam. I'm not calling what Lowes did is a scam but sure feels that way. car dealer. I WILL NOT JUSTIFY ANY FURTHER COMMENTS WITH REPLY, regardless of the rebuttal.

I bought my appliances at Show Low, AZ Lowes in early 2020. Wasn't told they were floor models, bought the extended warranty also. Didn't deliver and when I called was told the cooktop was missing a regulator so they ordered a new one. The other appliance is a double wall oven also a floor model. Finally got them delivered. They were purchased for a new house in TX. Didn't get to move when scheduled due to the pandemic. Moved in Jan. Had gas lines run to the new house for the cooktop. First installer finally came 6 weeks ago to measure, etc. He told me the oven had the wrong power cord on it, I needed the outlet for it changed and have the circuit upgraded. He quit so the company declined the installation. Last week a new installer came. Neither of the appliances has any internal parts have power cords changed so only lights work and the heat source can't be activated by customers. Paid for the installation through the local Lowes, Bastrop, TX. Now nothing can be installed and repairs probably aren't possible without totally rebuilding it. Manufacturer warranty expired before I even bought them and the Lowes Protection only covers installed appliances, funny they sold it to me knowing they weren't installed. Call and call and sometimes someone answers someone always has to talk to their manager who isn't there right now but they will take a message and have them call me back. Still waiting and I call about every other day. Have even been into the store and been told the same. Oh and the store where I purchased it says I signed an as-is document, that they can't produce because I never signed one. I would never have purchased floor models I was told they were special orders that had not been picked up. Boy have I learned a lesson.

What a nightmare! Sorry you had to go through this....

Lowes just did the same thing to me! Didn't notice when the set of kitchen appliances were delivered. But the range was definitely a used floor model. Went to the store to try and get an exchange for a new model and the manager said no! Wrote a letter to corporate, we'll see. Buyer beware.

Definitely refuse delivery. Call Corporate office. Stop dealing with the local store.

Lowes has a generous appliance return policy of 30 days. Return it if unhappy.

So, I guess you win. Yeah!
