Laundry soap conversion to HE recipe

I bought a gallon of Mrs. Meyers laundry soap before

my regular washer conked out. I ended up with maytag

front loader and the need for HE soap.

How can I convert this rather expensive, but oh so

fragrant Mrs. Meyers to HE?

I've read that using less soap isn't a good idea. Can

you dispel that for me?

Try using it a half or one-quarter dosing and see how well it cleans and how foamy it gets. Adjust depending on what you find. I use a single tablespoon of a big brand non-HE powder in my Fls with no problems. It is a low-sudsing product so it works for me and I have used it for many years with no problems.

It's impossible to predict whether that detergent will work for you; it utterly depends on your water chemistry and laundry habits. But it won't hurt to try, at worst you'll have to rewash if the clothes aren't clean enough, or do an extra rinse or two to remove excess suds. Ignore notions about not using a smaller quantity of product. Use what works for you, in your water.

I don't like liquid detergents, but if Mrs. M made a powdered Geranium scented product, I'd definitely buy it, even if just to scent up my laundry room during the wash process. My machines would wash all the smell out of the clothes, which is as it should be in a good Fl.

The HE detergents are formulated differently from the regular detergents. It is NOT the same detergent in an HE bottle with instructions to use less. If you follow the manufacturer instructions, you will see that the measuring cap on the HE bottle is the same size as the cap on the non-HE bottle. You use the same amount. Using half or quarter doses of regular detergent in an HE machine doesn't cut it. You are not getting sufficient amounts of surfactants and cleaning agents when you do that. Personally I prefer Charlie's Soap powder. It is non-specific about whether or not it is HE. One tablespoon cleans a full load no matter what kind of machine you have.

My front load washer and dryer were delivered about 3 days ago and all I had on hand for weekend laundry duty was my regular liquid detergent. I diluted it 50/50 with water and use about 1/4 the amount of detergent. Also, rather than using fabric softener, I use white vinegar in the rinse cycle. So far I have managed to do about 10 loads of laundry with no adverse effects. I don't like heavy scents, especially on my clothes, and have been using white vinegar instead of fabric softener for quite some time. I know it is not the perfect solution, but until I can get to the store and buy some HE detergent, it will have to suffice.

LArsi..how do you know ratis using Mrs Meyers?I

Rat..what kind of laundry detergent are you using? Also I'd avoid using liquids in a FL as a daily driver..its reported liquid detergent used exclusively causes washer problems.

Also what washer and dryer did you get?

Oh I see.an older post came to life and we got confused about the Mrs Meyerslol

Rat how much sudsing did you see when washing and in rinse cycle...oh we love when people get new machines...congrats

I got the Samsung 5400. So far I am seeing no sudsing and the clothes have come out super clean and with no perfume smells. I have been using All Free & Clear because it has no scent. I will be picking up some HE detergent this weekend, but did not have any on hand and needed to do laundry.

mamapiinky0, my daughter-in-law said she was told not to use liquid detergent in her fl washer. She noticed the clothes were coming out dingy and a film developed in the washer. She was using HE liquid and when she got a new washer, the delivery person told her that liquid detergents can cause the film. The Samsung washer I bought has a self clean cycle, but I'm leaving the door open anyway.

For what it's worth.. I think you can get by with non-HE Detergent, in a HE machine. You're simply using a high-dilution detergent.. in not so diluted water. So... using 1/3 or 1/4 of the recommended amount, will probably suspend dirt & soil, and clean effectively, imo.

Does anyone have any tells of Non-HE Detergent, dosing gone wrong? :)

Laundry Mitch, I use bleach in the load of linens every week. The diluted detergent was working great until I set the dinging bottle on the side and it ran all over the floor under the washer and the shelves. I still can't quite laugh about it. I had more suds than I've ever seen in a washer and learned that salt and baking soda will kill suds. It took 4 washes before I was finally able to get rid of all the suds. : (

Liquid fabric softener will also cut the suds as will defoamer for carpet machines. What a nightmare you must have had.

Mamapinky0, I stopped using fabric softener about a year ago and have gone to using white vinegar. I love how it cuts the soap and my clothes were not getting dingy from the oils in the softener. I finally bought some HE detergent at Sam's Club. They sell the powdered "Windfresh" brand and while it does have a scent, it is not overwhelming. I also had a neighbor give me 2 bottles of All HE liquid. I'm still using a lot less than I normally would, but the clothes are coming out super clean and the washer looks clean as well. Mitch, I've left the door open all the way after I finish laundry and then push it almost closed. So far I am totally loving this W/D pair.

I would suggest you use a pretreat stain remover with the Wind Fresh as there's no enzymes in it.

I could have sworn Wind Fresh had enzymes. I might be thinking of Costco's Institutional stuff though. The packaging is super similar.

Last month at Sams I checked Mich and no enzymes.
