Why does my POOL Room look unfinished?
Comments (37)First, turn the table so that if I were looking at it in this photo I would see the end of it , not the side. Better still, make it paralelle to the window. If the chandelier gets in the way, lift it up a bit. If you can get a different one because this one is way too big. A cool black fan with a light would be more conducive to a pool room atmosphere (in my opinion). You must paint the room a bold color like the red someone else suggested. And you could just do one wall, but I would not hesitate doing the entire room. Sometimes just adding paint is enough to make a huge difference. Good Luck!...See MoreWhat would you do with this unfinished area of hardwood flooring?
Comments (12)They would at least have to refinish the entire room, but possibly more depending on the direction the wood is running, size of door openings, etc. I would call someone out and get a quote. Alternatively, if there isn't a budget to repair the "hole" with oak and refinish, then I would inset a piece of wall-to-wall carpet with padding to make a sort of permanent area rug. I'm afraid that anything you do with trying to insert wood yourself is just going to look kludgy, not to mention that you will never match the height without sanding the entire room down anyway....See Morehow can I make a basement bedroom without a window look more appealing
Comments (14)@Lampert, French doors only to an interior room do not meet the code for egress. "According to the International Building Code, “Basements and sleeping rooms below the fourth story shall have at least one exterior emergency escape and rescue opening. . . . Such opening shall open directly into a public street, alley, yard or court.” This “escape and rescue opening” can be a window, skylight or patio door, but it must meet certain criteria: It must have a minimum net clear opening of 5.7 sq. ft. Net clear opening refers to the actual free and clear space that exists when the window is open. It is not the rough opening size or the glass panel size or any other size, but the actual opening a person can crawl through. Code officials want the opening large enough so firefighters can comfortably crawl through the window in full protective gear with an air tank on their back. Ground-floor windows only need a net clear opening of 5 sq. ft.; they can be smaller because a rescue ladder doesn't take up part of the opening. The opening height must be at least 24 in., and the opening width must be at least 20 in. The bottom of the clear opening must be within 44 in. of the floor. The window or other opening must be operational from the inside without keys or tools. Bars, grilles and grates over windows must be operational without tools or keys and still allow the minimum clear opening."...See MoreWhat do you think of the limited kitchen wall cabinet look?
Comments (35)it's not a simple matter of how much storage, it's the functionality. some of our storage is pretty bare because it's too annoying to get to from the work triangle. yet we don't have enough easy-to-reach storage near the dishwasher so those cabinets/drawers are absolutely jam packed. it really sucks. looking at your plans, when you're standing at the open dishwasher, where are you going to unload plates and glasses? do you have to cross the kitchen to do so? will you be in the way of somebody cooking? being able to stand in one spot while unloading most of the dishwasher is something people don't really think of. but once that functionality is gone, it sucks. looking at your specific floor plans, I think you really need at least one upper or some shelves above the DW. basically, stand in your kitchen and mime what you do on a daily basis. will somebody be able to cook while somebody else assists and cleans w/o the two of you running into each other?...See Morebronwynsmom
