safe tranquilizer for cats

HI, I am going to have eye surgery and I have to keep my eyes down - facing the floor for a week. I can only get up to go the bathroom and eat. I have a year old Persian. I will have to take him with me. He won't know where he is and I can't take care of him - my daaughters will. The vet iu giving me something for him - but It will only last a day or so. Why do you need a tranq for the cat? I don't understand.

Is is for the trip, going in car or plane. I got some from my vet in Tx for cats when were were moving from Tx to Mn driving in car. They totally freaked out in car and I was worried about the long long trip in car. The pills may have helped, but they were still freaked out and dazed. (they were to calm them down not knock them out) I don't remember what type drug it was.

You wrote "but it will only last for a day or so." That's what I don't understand. Tranqs are only supposed to last for a few hours. Why would you want it to last more than a day?

I agree with the above posters, this doesn't make sense.

-Are you having the procedure done out of town?
-Can't you find a neighbor or pet sitter to stay with the cat for however long you are gone?
-Why does the cat need sedation?

Please give us better details of what is going on, but unless this is a cat who doesn't travel well at all and you MUST take him with you, I don't see why he needs meds. And the meds should only be taken while he is traveling, not while he is in a house. He is really better off staying at home, especially while you are stressed and unable to care for him, he doesn't need to be at your side 24/7.

I will be at my daughter's for at least a week. During that time I am supposed to have my eyes facing downward 90% of the time. It is a 3 hour drive to her home. I don't have anyone to leave him with except at a shelter and I won't put h im there to be boarded. I was thinking if I divided the pill into 4 pieces and only used it when and if necessary would be ok. I will aske the vet. It is going to be better to take him with me. Thank you for your replies.

Shelters generally don't board pets. Some vets do.

Karan, I am sorry you have to go through this operation. It will help you in the end, which is great.

I still don't understand why you need a tranquilizer beyond the travel time. What do you mean, "When necessary"?

Good to ask the vet, who would not want you administering tranqs outside of travel time.
