Sampler questions

I have decided to make a sampler quilt for my grandson's wedding quilt. The twelve blocks use the same five fabrics.

The instructions give a cutting guide for each individual block as well as a cutting chart for the entire quilt.

Would you 1) cut only for a single block and then make that one up?

2) follow the whole cutting process and then sort and separate as needed for individual blocks? I can see doing this and putting all that is needed for a particular block into a baggie so that each is ready to go.

Never having done a sampler before, I don't want it to be any more difficult than necessary.

Any ideas you have will be great.

Theresa

As you are using the same material for each block I think your plan of cutting them all at the same time and putting them each in different bags would work fine.I might enclose the directings and pic for the block with each to elimiate confusion. I also assures you that you have enough fabric for the pattern.
Either way works so which ever works for you is the best way to go. Jayne

Yup, I would cut em and bag em with the instructions. I would also make sure I had some extra fabric, just because I know me and would need it.

I'd rather do all the cutting at one time. I'd cut and bag each. That makes it quicker when you have a short period of time to sew...no need to stop and cut first (& think). Just lay out one block and away you go!!

    Time for an update.
I have finished the 12 blocks for the centre of the quilt. Now on to the sashing and borders. I am embarrassed that it has taken so long to get this much done but life gets in the way.
I fully intended to follow your good suggestions about cutting and bagging. BUT... I decided to read the whole set of instructions before cutting. I found that there were a number of repeated units throughout the quilt and in the same colour combos. For example, there were some 60+ HST. And a number of Flying Geese units as well. AND the instructions for each of these had me sewing a triangle to a triangle. Must be a better way. So I did one sewing session of just HSTs using the grid method. Another day, I made FGs in the No Waste method. Much easier all round. Once these bits were done, I could then go ahead and do block by block.
Sorry to be so long-winded but I guess it is a good idea to read through everything before picking up the rotary cutter.

It sounds like you found a way to make it much easier. I love it when that happens! So...pictures... :)

Here are half the blocks. Sorry about the fuzziness. I think I need new batteries. There will be sashing between the blocks in a pale yellow print.

    Nice! Thanks for the picture.
Those are great blocks! Do they have names?

The blocks and quilt are from Block Central, a BOM called Sentimental Journey.
The original request was for a purple and gold quilt. But I could not find that colour fabric here in our small stores. Then bride and groom with my daughter were in a lovely store in Canmore Alberta where they saw the Aster Manor line of fabrics by Moda. Bride decided she liked them so we went from there. Next challenge was to find a pattern. One morning, I googled Sampler Quilts and up came this pattern and made in this line of fabrics. That seemed to be a message and I went from there, with a few colour changes.
It certainly isn't purple and gold.

No it isn't and some day down the line they'll be thrilled it is what it is. Those are classics.....and they'll still be classics decades from now when a more 'dramatic' and personal choice fitting a present decorating plan may seem like a passing fancy. My ex MIL and my sisters-in-law made us a quilt for our wedding present many years ago. She did it in silky material and went powder blue. Not that it wasn't appreciated, used and pretty........but it definately wouldn't have fit in most of the many bedrooms I've used since then. A traditional quilt gets away with murder. LOL. It 'belongs' anywhere. I just love that. It looks like something you'd see in a salt box in New England in the 1600s. wow
