Need advice on TINY kitchen

We just bought a house with a very small kitchen. It currently has a compact range (27" wide) and a small but full-sized fridge (30" wide). It does not have a dishwasher.

We'd really like to have a full-sized range and a dishwasher, even a compact one. So we're trying to figure out how to configure the space.

Our current best idea is to get a compact 23" fridge so that we'll have room for a full-sized 30" range. We might be able to squeeze a 28" fridge but I doubt it. We would keep them in their current places. Then we would put the dishwasher to the right of the sink (the right of the drawing, the left if you are facing the sink). Thought we could fit one in the other side, that would take away the drawers that are there and almost all cabinet space below.

The windows are both very low in the wall, so anything put there would block part of them but we might put in a countertop/shelving unit, like from Ikea under the window by the countertop or along the wall across from the window.

If anyone has any other ideas of how we could arrange the space, we would really appreciate it. We'll be buying new appliances so we can choose what we like. We're not too worried about a smaller fridge as we would buy a chest freezer for the basement.

Head over to the kitchens forum and post your question there. There are many very nice folks over there who will help you out with your layout.

have you tried the home depot online kitchen design tool? I did it for my kitchen.

Thank you both! I will post in the kitchen forum.

I did try home depot before but the designing program I found only let me choose from a very small selection of pre-formatted layouts, none of which was even close to the size of this kitchen. This one is much better and I am already inputting the info.

My goal would be to get the range and sink in the same run of countertop. Adding up your numbers it looks like you have at least 116" to work with before the window becomes a problem; I'd start at the right side (of the drawing) with an 18" dishwasher, then a 24" sink base with a single-bowl sink, then 32" of workspace, then your 30" range, and then another foot of countertop. Leave the fridge where it is and add some cabinets/counter where the range is now.

On the right side of the drawing, where does that doorway go? Could you move it to the middle of the kitchen wall, allowing the cabinets on the sink wall to go all the way to the corner of the room?

If so, you could (from L to R on the pic above) have the DW, sink cabinet, storage cabinets and range all on that wall. Then, keep the fridge and add a pantry cabinet next to it for storage.

If you can't move the doorway, I'd consider flipping your layout. In the current fridge corner, use a corner sink cabinet, and put the dishwasher and storage cabinets on each side. This utilizes the 62 inch wall space that's being wasted. Move the fridge and stove to the other wall with some storage cabinets. This is expensive because of plumbing and the stove fuel source (gas or electric) would need to be moved.

IMO - Move a doorway or move some plumbing & electrical.

    Good Luck.
