You can easily keep it contemporary and add Contemporary Industrial Chic Tuscan Style (if there is such a thing, LOL) touches to this. The short back splash will interfere with a full backsplash tile, if it can be removed, give it a try, it would d be better, but you could save money and simply paint it the wall a wall color, and maybe put a stainless steel sheet behind stove.

Remove the 4" backsplash and put in a light beige tumbled stone. Something that is in the same tone as the lighter specks of your granite.

This is one tile that we found and a light that might go over the island? we were hoping to bring in more of the copper tones to warm everything up.

I would remove the 4" granite back splash and install tile. Your tile floor is light, neutral...why not take a floor tile, sample size of the granite and a door/drawer to the tile store? Pick out a lighter colored tile with flecks of the darker colors, ie. counter top/cabinet color to tie it all together. Or intersperse the light tile with tiny accents blocks in a darker color.

The back splash is very nice, go for it! the inserts and ropes are a little much for my taste, just plain would be nice. But that's up to you.

The light I am not too crazy about, maybe something like two "cage pendants"...

Ultimately you need to go with what you like of course, I am heavily biased by designing "Tuscan" kitchens and being sick of it.

Yes, the pendants Aggie chose would look great. I also agree on keeping the backsplash tile plain with no ropes or accent tiles. Your cabinetry and granite are quite contemporary...embrace that!

Just to show you idea of back-splash covered by real stone panels available at vertical-dimension.com and if you are planning to use your stove for cooking, I absolutely agree with idea of a stainless steel sheet behind stove.

if you like the tuscan style consider some natural stone type of backsplash. It can be in any pattern but its that rough natural feel that you are going for. Also, keep the coloring a little on the more natural side as well, but that will all be a matter of preference. I would also recommend taking off that 4" backsplash. i don't think it is a huge monetary commitment and it will look sooooooo much better. Good luck!

For interesting options for tile you may want to consider what can be done with artwork. Virtually anything that you can paint, draw, or photograph can be transferred to and kiln-fired on porcelain...

Talk with a tile specialist. Sometimes you cannot remove the 4" granite b/c it leaves a large hole on the back of the granite counter. Many, tile over the 4" (this is what I would do). (photo)
Don't go too fancy-schmancy with the back splash. A subway tile that repeats the flooring would be my choice.

I like your tiles with the accents. A picture of the tile in your home against your back splash, would give the best idea of the look. Trust me light changes everything. : ) Good luck!
